Tesla Model Y Tops Local EV Sales Chart From Jan To April 2024
A total of 1,138 units of Tesla Model Y were registered in Malaysia within the first four months of 2024.
The road transport department (JPJ) has recently released a fresh batch of EV registration statistics, and it has since come to light for the Tesla Model Y to be Malaysia’s best-selling electric car for the first four months of 2024.
Despite deliveries only beginning in mid-March, a total of 1,138 registrations for this American e-crossover were nevertheless recorded by the JPJ in their statistics for the first four months of 2024. The runner-up in registrations from the period of between January and April of 2024 was the BYD Atto 3 at 1,118 units, while the Tesla Model 3 took home the last step on this particular podium, with 862 cars registered within that aforementioned time frame.
Coming in fourth and fifth place in the registration rankings on the other hand were both from BYD, with the more expensive Seal surprisingly securing more registrations between January and April 2024 than the Dolphin. The Chinese Tesla Model 3 alternative only lost out to the real deal by 22 units (840 units), whereas the all-electric hatchback saw 605 more examples be registered on the road in Malaysia within the first four months of this year.
Looking further down the list still, the Chery Omoda E5 and smart #1 comes in at sixth and seventh, with 244 and 204 units registered respectively during the first four months of 2024. Rounding up the top 10 places meanwhile are the cutesy GWM Ora Good Cat (145 units) , luxurious BMW i7 (121 units) and sporty Porsche Taycan (112 units).

Now if looking at brands instead of individual models here, the recently published statistics sees for BYD to still be eke-ing out a lead over Tesla in this past four months. The three BYD models accounted for nearly 40% of all EV sold in Malaysia from January to April 2024, while the near 2,000 registrations for the two Tesla models make up 32% of the pie.
As for taking an even more macro look at the EV registration data against the overall total vehicle registrations made between January to April 2024, the 6,298 fully-electric cars registered during the first four months of this year accounted for 2.28% of all cars registered in Malaysia within that time period. This is a stronger showing than the 1.6% market shares EVs commanded for the whole of 2023, with it being a near 6-fold increase to the 0.42% back in 2022.
