BYD Was Malaysia’s Best Selling EV Brand In 2023

BYD has also announced that its upcoming Seal is available for pre-order since 19th January.

While it shouldn’t really be a surprise to anyone already given that they since have become quite a common sight on Malaysian roads, but BYD themselves have in any case since confirmed that they are to indeed by the local market leader in EVs for 2023.

Now unfortunately, exact figures regarding the total number of EVs shifted by the Chinese automaker was not to be provided with this official announcement. Though if data from a recent report RHB Research is to be believed, BYD had managed to shift a staggering 3,728 units locally throughout the last 12 months.

And just to provide some context as to why that figure is worthy of being deemed ‘staggering’, the 3,728 BYD EVs sold in Malaysia in 2023 is apparently to account for nearly 40% of the 10,159 fully-electric cars delivered over here in the last 12 months.

BYD currently offers two models locally, with its Atto 3 touted by the automaker as being the most preferred model among Malaysians. Beyond its relatively affordable price tag (that starts from RM 149,800), its maker further proclaims for this e-crossover to be a favourite over here thanks to its an impressive range of up to 480 km on a single charge.

The other model on offer on the other hand is the Dolphin hatchback, which incidentally along with the aforementioned Atto 3 garnered over 660 bookings during BYD’s Chinese New Year Specials showcase at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium earlier this month. And to further capitalise on this wave of success, Sime Darby Beyond Auto (SDBA), the official distributors of BYD in Malaysia, has promised to also soon be rolling out a series of enticing promotions and captivating campaigns featuring a 0% interest rate throughout this new year.

Looking ahead into 2024 too, has officially opened the order books for the BYD Seal since the 19th of January. Interested parties can now place a booking for this upcoming Tesla Model 3 alternative through the official local BYD site linked here, with the booking fee for it being RM 1,000 per unit.

Jeffrey Gan, Managing Director, Southeast Asia, Sime Darby Motors, said, “Our achievement of the highest EV vehicle sales in 2023 reflects the strong support and trust by Malaysian consumers in BYD. Our comprehensive network of after sales support nationwide is a key differentiator in our success. We are delighted to be able to provide exceptional services and specialised technical care to all proud BYD owners and growing.”

“With the imminent arrival of the highly anticipated BYD SEAL, SDBA remains dedicated in fostering the adoption of EV in Malaysia and is confident that this will further solidify BYD’s position as a leader in the country’s evolving automotive landscape.”
