Here are just 9 little details of the MG S5 EV that earned a “hmm” from this writer.
So a little while ago, this writer had the opportunity to spend a couple of days with the MG S5 EV. And while the full video review can be viewed just right below, it also revealed a number of smaller quirks and features that were enough to warrant an article of their own.
So, here they are:
- In a world of fake plastic vents, the MG S5 EV actually features a real front air curtain, with an opening on either side that runs straight through to the front wheel well, presumably for aerodynamics.
- Just ahead of the wireless charger on the centre console is a curious little pocket. It is not really that wide or that deep, but it does work as a decent dedicated key fob holder. With a little persuasion too, it can even hold a smartphone at just the right angle for a quick glance at the screen.
- Turning to the boot, despite being an SUV, the MG S5 EV still comes with a rigid parcel shelf instead of the retractable tonneau cover that has become the norm among many of its rivals (or offering no cover at all).
- Lift the boot floor and you will find the lid over the tool compartment has the word TOOLS moulded into it in absolutely massive letters. It is now impossible to miss where the tools are. It also feels rather fitting… for what was once a British marque.
- Especially intriguing for a rear-motored EV, there is no frunk on the MG S5 EV. Pop the bonnet and one is instead greeted by all the usual EV gubbins, leaving no extra storage space to be found.
- The S5 EV’s full-length panoramic glass roof features an opening front section, making it more than just a fixed sheet of glass. It is not something seen all that often anymore despite nearly every Chinese car featuring a panoramic roof, and it comes in handy for venting hot cabin air after parking in the sun for a while.
- Speaking of vents, the front side air vents have an unusual fixed outlet design. While the controls still allow for lateral and vertical adjustment, the fixed housing means they do not make a great deal of difference to where the air actually goes. They are, however, positioned at just the right angle to keep this writer’s knuckles permanently chilled while driving.
- While the S5 EV may wear MG badges and proudly proclaim “Morris Garages” on the floor mats, the window glass quietly reveals the identity of its true parent company: SAIC Motor.
- And finally, there are warning labels on both sides of the front passenger sun visor. MG clearly wanted to make absolutely certain nobody is tempted to put a child seat there.
