Chery Omoda E5 E-SUV Lands Locally Costing RM 146,800

This attractive sticker price of the Omoda E5 is further sweetened by good specs and strong aftersales perks.

Following up from the rather popular Omoda 5, Chery has since decided to debut its all electric counterpart over here too. And with a fantastically attractive selling price of RM 146,800 to go on top of what is a more-than-decent car (on paper at least), it will really not be too surprising to learn if bookings of its main rivals do slump in the near future.

To be available in only one variant and one powertrain over here for now, motive power in the Omoda E5 comes courtesy of a front-mounted electric motor with 204 PS and 340 Nm of torque. Key performance metrics for this mid-sized all-electric SUV is a quoted century sprint time of 7.6 seconds, with it to then be maxing out at 172 km/h.

Though perhaps more pertinent for prospective buyers interested in the Omoda E5 is the knowledge for its 61 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack to be good for a WLTP-claimed 430 km of range from a single charge. Said pack is to be capable too of a peak charging rate of 9.9 kW and 80 kW from an AC and DC supply respectively, with the latter supply highlighted by the automaker as being able to top up this EV from 30% to 80% state of charge in 28 minutes.

Chery also highlights that its e-SUV to also feature the rather handy vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality, which allows the car to deliver up to 3.3 kW to power electrical appliances and devices. But what is probably the biggest news on the battery front is for the Chinese automaker to be the first in Malaysia to offer a one-to-one drive battery swap once it reaches a 70% state of health, which all but essentially all but guarantees strong residuals for this EV in the used market!

Moving the discussion onto its exterior now, the Omoda E5 can be most visually distinguished from its fairly similar-looking petrol-powered counterpart by way of its new flush face and 18-inch aero-style alloy wheels. Other less noticeable but equally noteworthy bits to mention too on the outside of this all-electric Chery is its the inclusion of an active shutter grille up front for added aero-efficiency, in addition to a frunk as well (on this front-motored EV no less!) under its bonnet for added practicality.

Like any other Chery offering in Malaysia, the Omoda E5 undoubtedly comes as standard with a looong list of features. On the outside for instance, this e-SUV nets LED projector headlamps and tail lights, puddle lights, a powered sunroof and a distinctive rear spoiler.

On the inside meanwhile, the Omoda E5’s kit list encompasses ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control, selectable drive modes, leather upholstery (in either two-tone blue and grey or all-black), interior ambient lighting, a 50 W ultra-fast wireless charger with cooling function and an 8-speaker Sony sound system. Screens within this Chery numbers two, with those two being a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch central infotainment touchscreen featuring wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration.

As for safety on the other hand, Chery’s ADAS 2.5 bundle packs with it a 360º surround view camera, lead vehicle departure alert, front collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning and prevention, lane keep assist, rear cross traffic alert, tyre pressure monitoring. The Chinese automaker has further highlighted the safety of this EV’s battery pack by demonstrating in various promotional videos for it to have passed a ‘water wading test’ and ‘bottom scrapping test’.

What is nevertheless perhaps even more reassuring than that is for this Omoda E5 to feature a rather comprehensive warranty package. The standard vehicle warranty is seven years or 150,000 km, while there is a separate eight-year or 160,000 km battery and drive unit warranty that covers the power motor control unit, power battery management system and vehicle control unit.

And just to make the already rather attractive price tag of RM 146,800 even more so, Chery is offering the first 2,000 Omoda E5 buyers with a free charging wall box, a Vehicle-to-Load charger, and RM1,000 free charging credits with EVC. All buyers of this e-SUV can also get as low as 2.08% interest rate for financing via Maybank, access to EVC’s new autocharging feature and free charging at all Chery outlets nationwide.
