Toyota Celebrates 40 Years Of AE86 With A Special Edition GR86

It should come as no surprise this GR86 is painted in the obligatory hachiroku panda palette.

The Toyota AE86 turns 40 this year. And to celebrate four decades of this cultural icon, the Japanese automaker has since decided to debut a special edition of its spiritual successor in its home market.

Based on the RZ trim of the GR86 offered in Japan, this newly launched AE86-themed special edition is to unsurprisingly feature an homage to the iconic hachiroku panda livery. Available in either a white or red base colour, the exterior of this two door sports car is then adorned by blacked-painted wing mirror caps, door handles and subtle boot spoiler.

This black theme continues too on the outside courtesy of blacked-out 18-inch wheels, which flank a subtle door stripe that has on it “Since 1983 40th”. Unfortunately however, the obligatory ‘藤原とうふ店 (自家用)’ decal on the doors (that should really be obligatory on any AE86 commemorative special) would likely have to be added on in the aftermarket.

That said though, any self-respecting tofu delivery driver should be happy to hear that this AE86-themed GR86 does net the upgraded set of Brembo ventilated disc brakes and Sachs shock absorbers as standard. This special edition also nets a black-and-red interior, which is then complimented by floor mats of a similar colour combination and an embroidered ‘Since 1983 40th’ logo on the door cards.

Toyota is currently asking ¥3,822,000 (RM 121,000) for the version equipped with the 6-speed manual version of this special edition, and ¥3,920,000 (RM 124,000) for its automatic counterpart. Though with production of this AE86-themed GR86 only limited to 200 units, it will likely be a matter of luck on the inevitable lottery instead of money that will determine its prospective buyers.
