Jacob Ma Succeeds Eagle Zhao As BYD Malaysia’s New MD

Outgoing BYD Malaysia MD Eagle Zhao will shift focus to the brand’s Indonesian operations instead.
BYD Malaysia has recently announced a slight shuffle in its top management positions, with Jacob Ma now appointed as its new Managing Director. He succeeds outgoing MD Eagle Zhao, who will now fully focus on his new role as President Director of PT BYD Motor Indonesia.

Having been here since the early days of its explosive local growth — beginning with the launch of the BYD Atto 3 in late 2022 — Zhao oversaw the Chinese marque’s stratospheric rise into the EV Goliath it is in Malaysia today. During his tenure, the EV maker introduced seven models from the main group and one from Denza, which equated to the delivery of over 30,000 vehicles nationwide. Along the way too, the brand also rapidly expanded its dealer network and strengthened its aftersales capabilities.
“Malaysia has been an incredibly important chapter in my journey with BYD,” said Zhao, reflecting on his time here. “Together with our partners and team, we have built a strong foundation for both BYD and Denza.”

Taking over the reins, Jacob Ma arrives with a strong mix of global and regional experience. He previously spent five years at BYD’s headquarters in Shenzhen as Head of Training, before moving on to serve as Vice President of BYD Indonesia for two years. Earlier in his career too, Ma gained experience in consulting and the aviation sector, particularly in technology transfer and operational transformation.
As Managing Director of BYD Malaysia, Ma will oversee overall business strategy, including sales, marketing, network development and aftersales operations. His immediate priorities include strengthening dealer partnerships, expanding the product portfolio, and sharpening the positioning between BYD and Denza.
“I am honoured to take on this responsibility at such an exciting time,” said Ma. “Our focus will be on reinforcing operational excellence, elevating customer experience, and ensuring sustainable growth for both BYD and Denza.”

This leadership transition comes as BYD continues to strengthen its foothold in Southeast Asia, with Malaysia remaining a key growth market for both its core lineup and the more premium Denza brand. It is also a pivotal moment for the company locally, as the Chinese automaker prepares to commence CKD operations here later this year, with Denza soon to add another sleeker model to complement its existing D9 premium people mover as well.
