BMW Motorrad Malaysia has introduced a new variant of the BMW R 1300 GS, now equipped with the brand’s Automated Shift Assistant (ASA) for riders who want the convenience of automated gear changes without giving up control.
The R 1300 GS was first introduced in Malaysia at the Malaysia Autoshow in 2024, and this latest version adds ASA as part of an enhanced Dynamic Package.
The system automates both clutch operation and gear shifting, making the motorcycle easier to ride, particularly when starting, stopping and manoeuvring. Riders can still choose how much control they want, with both manual and fully automated shifting available.
In M mode, the rider selects gears using the foot shift lever while ASA takes care of clutch operation. Switching to D mode allows the system to handle gear changes automatically based on engine speed and load, aiming for smoother and more comfortable shifts.
Beyond ASA, the Dynamic Package also includes Dynamic Suspension Adjustment (DSA), Gear Shift Assistant Pro, Riding Modes Pro and Sports Brake.
The R 1300 GS also comes with BMW Motorrad’s Touring and Comfort packages. The Touring Package includes preparation for a GPS device, central locking, hand protector extensions and case holders, while the Comfort Package adds a passenger kit, electrically adjustable windscreen and main stand.
Other equipment includes Adaptive Height Adjustment, a Deluxe headlight and an M lightweight battery.
Powering the adventure bike is BMW Motorrad’s latest 1,300 cc two-cylinder boxer engine, producing 107 kW (145 hp) at 7,750 rpm and 149 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm. BMW says this is the most powerful boxer engine it has produced for series production.
Despite the larger engine, the R 1300 GS uses a compact layout with the gearbox positioned underneath the engine, helping keep the motorcycle’s total weight at 237 kg.
For the new variant, Malaysian buyers can choose between White Aluminium Metallic, which is a new colour option, and Black Storm Metallic.
With the addition of ASA, the R 1300 GS now offers a different take on the traditional adventure-bike experience, combining its existing touring and off-road capabilities with technology designed to make gear changes and everyday riding less demanding.
