Here’s a few cool examples of some Subaru SUVs getting totally into the spirit of off-road adventuring.
With the steady rise in popularity of outdoor camping over here since the pandemic, and more recently too the flurry of 4×4 launches locally, there might just be more than a few Malaysians out there who might right now be tickled by the idea of getting an off-roader and heading down the path less travelled.
But before deciding to put one’s names down for the recently launched GWM Tank 300 or five-door Suzuki Jimny, just remember here that there is still to be one brand out there that melds the 4×4 adventuring spirit into a daily-drivable package: Subaru!
Now sure, both the XV and Forester might not have the boxy profile that gives these aforementioned slab-sided 4×4 its macho off-road look. Though what it loses in the Tonka Toy aesthetics, both Scoobies claw back more than some ground by actually being more practical and street-able (incidentally where most of these cars will spend most of their lives) than both square-shaped SUVs with their side hinged tailgates.
And while they may not have the more hard-core off-roading paraphernalia like locking diffs and a low-range ‘box too, the symmetrical permanent all-wheel drive technology on these comparatively lightweight SUVs (as well as Subaru’s reputation for ruggedness) will nevertheless still see for them be good enough for most of the off-roading most of its owners will dare subject on their pride and joy.
Oh, and to those who really want to properly go down the beaten path with their Subaru SUVs, a recent smattering of some rather amazing off-road Scooby posts from the good folk over at r/overlanding on Reddit has shown that a few mods is all that is needed to make one into a car that could foreseeably climb every mountain, ford every stream, follow every rainbow, until they find their dream.
