Honda to Launch Mitsubishi Triton-Based Pickup in ASEAN by 2028

Honda and Mitsubishi Motors have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to develop a new Honda pickup truck based on the Mitsubishi Triton. The model is scheduled to go on sale in ASEAN markets in 2028.

This marks the first time the two companies have agreed to supply complementary vehicles to each other’s lineups.

The collaboration builds on a strategic partnership framework established on August 1, 2024. The original MOU involved Honda, Mitsubishi Motors and Nissan.

The three companies have been exploring ways to share vehicles and make better use of their existing products. This approach could help each company expand its lineup more efficiently while responding to regional market demand.

Honda to Enter ASEAN Pickup Truck Market

The new model will give Honda a pickup truck offering in ASEAN, where the company currently does not sell this type of vehicle.

It will be based on the Mitsubishi Triton, a one-tonne pickup built on a ladder-frame chassis. The Triton is one of Mitsubishi Motors’ global strategic models and has strong demand in ASEAN.

Using the existing Triton as a base will allow Honda to expand its lineup without developing an entirely new pickup independently. The companies said the arrangement would create benefits for both sides.

Mitsubishi Motors to Increase Thailand Production

For Mitsubishi Motors, the collaboration is expected to increase production volume and improve capacity utilisation at its manufacturing plant in Thailand.

The arrangement will allow Mitsubishi Motors to supply the vehicle platform while Honda adds a pickup to its range. Both companies will use their existing product capabilities to support their respective business needs.

The agreement is part of broader discussions between Honda, Mitsubishi Motors and Nissan on short-, medium- and long-term cooperation.

The three companies plan to continue developing their strategic partnership. Their focus remains on strengthening competitiveness and meeting different customer needs through their existing products and technologies.
