Toyota’s Upcoming bZ4X e-SUV Will Retain Its Steering Yoke
This Tesla-esque feature is however just the tip of the tech talk with this new bZ4X EV.
While it is reasonable to say that Toyota has been fairly tardy to the EV game, they certainly haven’t been wasting time when it comes to its first purpose-built battery electric vehicle though. That is as in just half a year since revealing its bZ4X in its concept form, the Japanese auto giant has already been able to announce further details on the production version that is to launch some time next year.
Toyota for instance has since confirmed that its Tesla-style steering yoke will still be retained in the production version of its upcoming EV, albeit only for certain markets whose safety laws allow it. It has also been hyped too for the bZ4X to feature an optional roof-mounted solar panel, which can generate electricity for up to 1,800 km of driving range annually.
It is though perhaps not really Toyota to just focus on the fancy headline grabbing tech toys, as the Japanese automaker has nevertheless also made known the more mundane (but perhaps more pertinent) details with this upcoming EV. Such as the fact that it’ll come in either single or twin motor form, with both being fed by a 355 V water-cooled lithium-ion battery pack that has a capacity of 71.4 kWh.
Now according to Toyota, the single motor front wheel drive variant of the bZ4X will pack a moderately powerful 150 kW, and an adequate 265 Nm of torque Figures which will apparently be sufficient to propel this sharply-styled SUV to the century sprint in 8.4 seconds, and yield a range of roughly 450 km on a single charge.
Rather strangely however, doubling of the motor count (and an extra 85 kg to its two-tonne kerb weight) in the all-wheel drive variant only results in a power bump of only 10 hp. It is therefore not too surprising to see this flavour e-SUV only managing to hit the 100 km/h mark from a standstill in a marginally quicker 7.7 seconds, before topping out at its 160 km/h top speed that is identical to its single motor sibling.
With the dual motor variant featuring Subaru’s famed all-wheel drive technology though, there may still be an argument yet in opting for this particular flavour of Toyota EV. And there may also be a reason to go for the bZ4X over any other EV in general actually, particularly when the Japanese auto giant is touting for its aforementioned battery packs to retain 90% of original after 10 years of use or 240,000 km.
In continuing on the topic of features Toyota is touting meanwhile, it is probably worth highlighting too that the much-hyped steering yoke will actually be a part of the automaker’s first-ever steer-by-wire system. A system which it is claimed will deliver an improved steering feeling and reduced vibrations, thus leading to supposedly a more car-like handling for this almost RAV4-sized crossover.
Other notable features that will be found within this BEV expectedly includes an infotainment system that is capable of over-the-air software updates and also naturally the latest and greatest iteration of the Toyota Safety Sense suite of driver aides, with further information on both these topics to be found in the incredibly detailed press release below. Missing however is information on how much exactly the bZ4X will cost, when it is to arrive in showrooms worldwide come mid-2022.
Focusing on a more local perspective too, mum is the word in regards to whether this particular e-SUV will be arriving in Malaysia any time soon. Seeing though as Toyota is currently ramping up efforts on local hybrid and PHEV production over here, there might actually be a chance yet for the bZ4X to be making its Malaysian debut sooner rather than later.
PRESS RELEASE: Toyota has announced the details of bZ4X, its all-new model BEV.
Toyota’s Approach to Carbon Neutrality is “Practical and Sustainable”
Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) is striving to resolve various issues to realize a sustainable society, with the aim of passing down this beautiful Earth, our home planet, to future generations. We leverage strengths fostered through manufacturing, producing technological innovation in application to CASE to expand the potential of cars, striving to provide services that provide freedom of mobility to all, in an effort to contribute to the achievement of the SDGs.
In particular, reduction of CO2 emissions is an urgent challenge on a global scale, and Toyota is tackling initiatives towards achieving carbon neutrality (CN) by 2050. It is significant that the popularization of eco-friendly vehicles will contribute to reductions in CO2.
For this reason, Toyota believes in the idea of “introducing sustainable vehicles practically” and is developing a full line-up of electrified vehicles―comprising HEVs, PHEVs, BEVs, and FCEVs―in preparation to offer its customers a wide range of choices. Toyota aims to reduce CO2 with products that are easy to use and highly appealing.
The new BEV series, Toyota bZ, is also based on this policy. We aim to gain acceptance from many customers in regions with great demand for BEVs and plentiful supply of electricity from renewable energy, such as China, the U.S., Europe, and Japan, and plan to introduce seven Toyota bZ models by 2025.
“bZ” is New Value Provided by “beyond Zero”
With the introduction of its new bZ series, Toyota established the following four target values.
- You & Others
In addition to comfortable cabins, Toyota bZ offers a new lifestyle and the opportunity to spend precious time with family and friends.
- You & Your Car
Toyota bZ delivers the BEV’s unique joy of driving and excitement at anticipated possibilities.
- You & the Environment
Toyota bZ will not only reduce CO2 and other emissions―it aims to contribute positively to the environment.
- You & Society
Toyota bZ aims to create a safer society where everyone enjoys greater peace of mind.
The bZ4X was developed on this basis, as a medium-segment SUV-type BEV, the first model in the Toyota bZ series. Toyota will promote the deployment of BEVs in its full lineup starting with this bZ4X.
bZ4X Vehicle Overview
- Cars that are more than just a means of transport, able to provide enjoyable time and space for passengers, with the “activity hub” concept
Toyota developed the “activity hub” concept for cars that will usher in a new era, incorporating the intent to play a role in building “bonds” by being able to provide enjoyable time and space for driver and passengers alike. We are striving after innovation in all areas, including interior, styling, driving sensation and performance, aiming to create exciting cars.
- Toyota bZ4X adopts a BEV-dedicated platform (first for Toyota) based on e-TNGA philosophy, to achieve impressive driving performance through a low center of gravity and greater rigidity.
The BEV-dedicated platform (first for Toyota) which is the basis of all systems was jointly developed with Subaru Corporation (Subaru). Through this platform, which incorporates the unique requirements of BEVs with a low center of gravity and greater rigidity, we pursued off-road performance required for SUVs, with attractive, smooth, intuitive driving performance, not just for a BEV, but for any car.
- Performance Focused on Safety and Peace of Mind
Toyota was determined to offer performance focused on safety and peace of mind for new owners, as with all Toyota vehicles. In practical terms, we aimed for a BEV that can be driven safely and conveniently for many years, considering securing cruising range, particularly in winter settings, and targeting a top-class battery capacity retention ratio (90% after 10 years). In terms of safety, in addition to pursuing a high degree of battery cell safety, we adopted the latest Toyota Safety Sense active safety package, used a body structure adapted to collision from any direction, and a battery pack that contributes to ensuring protective performance in a collision, aiming to create a BEV that provides driving safety.
