smart #1 Ranks As 3rd Best-Selling Premium e-SUV In Malaysia

smart has recently and rather proudly announced that its #1 has reached secured a remarkable achievement, by being the third best-selling e-SUV over here. 

The Malaysian EV market has witnessed exponential growth in recent years, with EV sales volume surging from 3,079 units in 2022 to 11,624 units in 2023, accompanied by a significant increase in market share from 0.43% to 1.45%. Against this backdrop of rapid electrification and shifting consumer preferences, smart Malaysia touts that it has emerged as a frontrunner, capturing the hearts and minds of Malaysian consumers with its commitment to innovation and customer-centricity.

Zhang Qiang, Chief Executive Officer of smart Malaysia said of this achievement, ‘This milestone reflects the growing demand for urban mobility solutions in the region and reaffirms smart’s goal to position itself as a leader in the premium EV segment. He further added, with only one model sold, as opposed to other key players in the industry, we have achieved this great success. This exemplifies the trust our customers have in our product and services, and I would like to express my gratitude to our customers.’’

Curiously however, smart has not released any concrete sales figures for its #1 thus far. Instead, it has elected to just tout that it has sold 100 EVs ‘within an unprecedented (and unspecified) one-month timeframe, setting a new sales record’. 

Similarly, smart has not actually revealed who bested it to take the higher two-spots in the premium e-SUV sales segment. Though given that the premium e-SUV (for which smart terms as those costing over RM 180k) market in Malaysia is not that big to begin with, it is not hard to guess for the high riding blob with a T badge on its nose to be the segment sales leader, while the silver medal could be a toss between a chic Swede or a polarising Bavarian. 

In any case, smart continues to proclaim that its admittedly rather excellent #1 has demonstrated its appeal to consumers seeking both performance and efficiency in their urban commute. The marque touts that has consistently ranked among the top contenders in the EV premium SUV segment, with variants like the spicy hot BRABUS earning acclaim for their exceptional performance.
