The big news here is the addition of a new off-road inspired PRO-4X variant to the local Navara lineup.
It has been a busy period for local pickup news this week. That is because not only has Ford, Mitsubishi and Isuzu all had their time in the sun in recent time, but Nissan has also joined in the fun most recently with the local launch of the facelifted version of its Navara pickup.
First unveiled late last year after a dry spell of some six years, the self-styled ‘Mother Trucker’ gains various incremental improvements under its subtly redesigned skin. The big news that is grabbing headlines with this new Navara however will probably be its new top-of-the-line, off-road inspired PRO-4X variant that is supposedly to take on the likes of the Hilux Rogue, the new D-Max X-Terrain and even perhaps the Ranger Raptor.
Getting back to the updates that were made throughout the range however and starting with the exterior refresh first, the new Navara gains a more imposing front end design courtesy of a more imposing ‘interlock’ front grille that supposedly apes the look full-sized Nissan Titan pickup currently sold in North America. Moving round the back meanwhile, a redesigned tailgate is flanked by new LED tail light clusters and a reworked rear bumper with an integrated step.
Continuing round the rear of the facelifted Navara, all double cab variants of this updated Nissan gains a reworked version of its signature rear multi-link suspension setup with Dual-Rate Coil Springs. Adding to that are a reshaped load bed with Tailgate Assist, a strengthened rear axle with electronic rear diff locks and a new steering rack in the aid of improving the versatility and drivability of this pickup.
Speaking of improving the drivability of the Navara, the Japanese automaker has also brought its Nissan Intelligent Mobility suite of active safety aids to the mid to high trim levels of this pickup. Attention has also been paid to further refining the experience within its cabin too, with the addition of a noise isolation acoustic laminated front windscreen, an 8-inch central infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 7-inch TFT display within the instrument cluster as well as a new steering wheel and zero gravity seats being among the interior enhancements made during this update.
As for what powers the updated Navara, there has unfortunately been no changes to the two variants of 2.5 litre turbodiesel four-cylinders on offer from before. Mated to a six-speed manual transmission, power and torque output is rated at 163 PS and 403 Nm respectively. Paired with a 7-speed automatic transmission however, these figures than rise to 190 PS and 450 Nm of torque.
Coming fully imported from Thailand with a five-year/150,000 km warranty, the updated Navara will cost from RM 91,900 for the base-spec single cab variant to RM 142,200 for the range-topping PRO-4X trim level.
