Mitsubishi Triton Athlete Launched In Malaysia

This Athlete replaces the Adventure X as the new flagship in the Mitsubishi Triton lineup.

Mitsubishi has recently announced a new variant of its ever-popular pickup truck locally. Dubbed the Athlete, this new trim level is set to replace the existing Adventure X as the flagship within the Triton lineup.

Touted as ‘the embodiment of toughness refined’, the new Triton Athlete is in essence nearly identical to the Adventure X it replaces. Just with some new (mainly black painted) trim pieces and various other enhancements added on top of it.

Starting from the outside and beginning up front, this new variant gains a gloss black ‘Dynamic Shield’ front grille and front under-garnish in place of the typical chrome ones. The gloss black treatment continues down the side with gloss black side mirrors, door handles, aero-type window deflectors, 18-inch alloy wheels and side steps.

To further add to the macho-ness of this flagship pickup variant, Mitsubishi has also given the Athlete a custom graphics pack that runs along most of the rear half of the truck. This particular Triton trim level is also available in three distinct colours: Sun Flare Orange Pearl, White Diamond and Jet Black Mica.

Stepping inside the Triton Athlete, new LED illuminated thread plates are to be found on the sills. Also featured within the cabin are a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear knob with orange contrast stitching, as well as a first-in-class rear air-con vents and a 7-inch central infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration.

Being the top-of-the-line Triton too, the Athlete naturally also comes with all the active safety tech that has become increasingly commonplace on pickup trucks these days. These include the inclusion of Forward Collision Mitigation (FCM), Blind Spot Warning with Lane Change Assist (BSW with LCA), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Ultrasonic Misacceleration Mitigation System (UMS), Auto High Beam (AHB) and 7 SRS airbags. A 360º All Round Monitor (ARM) and Driving Video Recorder (DVR) are also featured within this flagship variant.

As for what lies under the hood of the Triton Athlete, that would be Mitsubishi’s existing 2.4-litre MIVEC turbodiesel which is capable of churning out a healthy 181 PS and 430 Nm of torque. Mated to 6-speed automatic transmission, drive is sent to all four wheels via the Super Select 4WD II with off-road mode ‘for optimum traction and handling characteristics in any given terrain’.

The Triton Athlete is now available for bookings at Mitsubishi dealerships nationwide, in addition to the Mitsubishi Online Showroom. Priced at a rather steep RM 141,500, this new flagship variant is nevertheless available with a 5-year/200,000 km warranty.
