Facelifted Mercedes-AMG G63 Debuts Locally From RM 1,948,888
This monstrous AMG-fied G-Class now pairs its 4.0-litre twin turbo V8 with a 48 V mild hybrid system.
Among the more massive offerings that made its debut today at Mercedes-Benz Malaysia’s ‘Luxury Like No Other’ event was to be the facelifted Mercedes-AMG G63. This hot 4×4 could currently be yours from RM 1,948,888 (including 10% sales tax) in Peninsular Malaysia, with there naturally to a whole host of available personalisation options to push that price even higher still.
Now at the heart of this Affalterbach-altered beast is to still be the tried-and-tested AMG 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8, which churns out an adequate 585 hp and 850 Nm of torque. Newly added with this facelift however is the fitment of a 48-volt mild hybrid system, with the integrated starter-generator (ISG) providing an additional 15 kW (20 hp) of boost and 200 Nm of electrified boost for some extra initial oomph.
Mated to the aforementioned V8 meanwhile is an AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission, which Mercedes-Benz touts to delights sport drivers with dynamic shift characteristics and an emotional intermediate (double de-clutch) throttle function. Depending on the selected driving programme controlled through the AMG Dynamic Select, it will allow for both sporty and fast or comfortable and barely noticeable gearshifts.
From a standstill, this 2.6-tonne body-on-frame 4×4 takes just 4.4 seconds to accelerate to 100 km/h. Those willing to keep their foot hard down will then see this block of flats eventually top out at 220 km/h, or a presumably butt-clenching 240 km/h if the AMG Performance Package box in the options list was ticked.
To keep this big behemoth in check round the bends on tarmac, the G63 features AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL suspension on all four corners with active hydraulic roll stabilisation and adaptive adjustable damping. A low-range transfer case and a trio of diff-locks on the other hand is on hand to help this 4×4 basically climb every mountain and ford every stream, until you find your dream.
Touching on its exterior aesthetics now, the G63 pretty much retains the same slightly-more rounded breeze block look that was first previewed when this particular iteration of G-Class was first shown off back in 2018. Those in tune with the G life though would likely notice the slightly redesigned front bumper with a newly enlarged pair of air intakes, as well as a very slightly different rear bumper that now houses the reverse camera right above the number plate cutout.
The G63s officially imported over here will come replete with the AMG Night Package, adding various bits of black and dark chrome exterior accents to go with the standard 22-inch AMG cross-spoke forged wheels. Other exterior features worth a mention on this massive 4×4 meanwhile include an set of Adaptive MULTIBEAM LED headlights with Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus illuminating the way up front, AMG crest on the bonnet and in the exterior mirror projection for the first time, red-painted AMG brake callipers, an AMG Specific Exhaust System with twin side-exit tailpipes right beneath its rear pair of doors, in addition to an AMG fuel filler cap finished in silver chrome.
Moving on within, the Nappa leather-lined cockpit of this G63 is to be accented by various bits of AMG trinkets that includes an AMG Performance steering wheel, AMG side sills, as well as lashings of carbon fibre on the doors and dashboard grab handle. The pair of 12.3-inch driver and central infotainment displays (running a slightly older iteration of Mercedes’ MBUX infotainment system) naturally also net some AMG goodies too, like an exclusive Supersport screen featuring a central rev counter and AMG Track Pace lap timer serving as the diametric opposite to the new Offroad Cockpit off-road telemetry central display with transparent bonnet feature.
Among the long list of kit available within the G63 includes a wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration, a sliding sunroof, a Qi wireless charger, twin 11.6-inch rear touch monitors, as well as active multi-contour seats including the ENERGIZING Package Plus with massage function and seat climate control. And to those who for whatever reason gets bored of the V8 burble coming from up front, this luxury off-roader further features a 15-speaker Burmester 3D surround sound system with Dolby Atmos.
Active Lane Keep Assist has been added during the update performed on this big G, with the rest of its safety suite now encompassing Parking Assist PARKTRONIC, Active Lane Keeping Assist, GUARD 360° Vehicle protection Plus, Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC, Parking package with 360° camera, in addition to a tyre pressure monitoring system.
To those who want to witness this G63 for themselves, it is currently on public display at Mercedes-Benz’s Luxury Like No Other event taking place from November 5 to 10 at the Autohaus showroom in Mutiara Damansara. This AMG-fied 4×4 will be on show alongside the svelte SL63 drop top, as well as the GLE63 S, GLE63 S Coupe, GLC43 Coupe and GLC 350e Coupe.
