Many used luxury SUV buyers have forgotten about the BMW X5 xDrive30d today.
In Klang Valley you can find dozens on sale at the various used car lots and the common colours are white, grey and black.
The asking prices are very reasonable when you consider what it cost brand new and the fact that these diesels are more reliable over the plug-in hybrid versions that costs a lot more to run and maintain.
When this version of the X5 was first shown in Malaysia in April 2014, there was little sales enthusiasm at first as the asking price was lofty RM558,800 for the diesel and RM598,800 for the petrol version. Yes, at half a million Ringgit, there were a number of other options in the Malaysian market.
Sadly, with the lack of Euro5 diesel available in Malaysia at the time, the wonderful diesel version sold in few numbers only. Today, quality Euro5 diesel is sold in all BHPetrol stations and nearly all other fuel brands carry them so running a diesel BMW is no issue.
In case you were wondering, the BMW X5 xDrive30d was powered by a six-cylinder diesel engine which delivered 258 hp with a peak torque of 560Nm which allowed this SUV to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.9 seconds with a reduced carbon emission of 164g/km and a lowered fuel consumption of 6.2 liter per 100 kilometers.
So, what is the selling price of a 2014 BMW X5 diesel. Well, we have seen prices advertised from RM128,800 to RM148,000 with different mileage and general condition. This is a far better buy over a used plug-in hybrid X5. (plus the new all electric BMW iX is selling as fast as a X5 PHEV).
Somehow, the X5 seems to have a cabin quality that is better than BMW sedans from the same era. Brittle and sticky plastics are not so common and the trim seems better put together.
Most first owners were wealthy family or business people, so no modification and unwanted aftermarket accessories like you will find in BMW sedans.
Still you need a full service record, or at least the records from the past 2 years to show that this unit was well looked after. Previous owner can be a Datuk, or Doctor, or VVIP, it does not matter as they are all the same as the noodle seller who owns a BMW.
You HAVE to get a trusted mechanic to check the X5 before you buy. The dealer will probably ask for RM1,000 deposit to ensure you are not a time waster. If there is a genuine problem, the dealer will either fix it or reduce the selling price.
Remember, this is s used vehicle, there is no 100 percent condition. Buying a used X5 also means putting aside RM10k to RM15k aside for new bushes, tyres, brake pads, hoses and battery in the first year of ownership.
The second and third year will be lighter on the wallet.
You might ask, how much will it depreciate in the 4th year? Well…… based on our estimate, you will be looking at a RM15k a year depreciation the first two years and then a RM5k to RM10k depreciation in the following 3rd and 4th year.
So, after 4 years of ownership you might get just RM80k or so.
