Volkswagen Golf Mk8.5 R Line Debuts Locally Costing RM 185,990

The first 5050 Golf Mk8.5 R Line orders will nevertheless be entitled to a launch price of RM 179,990.

For those who want the latest Golf but in a more sensible guise, there’s finally some good news again! Such is as alongside the fiery GTI and even hotter R in Volkswagen Malaysia’s current line-up now comes the new Mk8.5 R-Line, marking this variant’s return over here some three years after its quiet discontinuation back in 2023.

Arriving in the facelifted Mk8.5 form, the big news with this R-Line is what sits under the bonnet. A new 1.5-litre eTSI turbocharged four-cylinder engine with mild-hybrid assistance replaces the pre-facelift model’s 1.4-litre TSI unit, which incidentally also marks the first electrified Volkswagen to be officially launched on Malaysian soil. What is however somewhat old though is the return of a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, replacing the Mk8’s curious standard eight-speed Aisin-sourced automatic.

And perhaps even more curiously too is that despite the added displacement and electrified assistance, outputs from the Mk8.5 actually remain unchanged at 150 hp and 250 Nm. In fact, the this latest Golf is actually 0.1 seconds slower in the 0–100 km/h sprint than what came immediately before, now taking 8.6 seconds. Still, standard XDS electronic differential locking should help it carry speed through corners, while those who truly drive this sensible VW sensibly may even come close to its claimed fuel consumption figure of 5.2 L/100 km.

Moving onto the outside, the facelifted Golf brings with it subtle styling tweaks over its predecessor, most notably sleeker IQ.Light LED matrix headlights. These are paired with a new full-width daytime running light strip across the front fascia, with the VW emblem also illuminated for the first time.

Being an R-Line as well, this variant of VW naturally gains a number of sportier visual touches. This includes more aggressive bumpers on both ends, which are then complemented by side skirts and a set of 17-inch Coventry alloy wheels.

Turning to the cabin, the R-Line mirrors its full-fat R counterpart with semi-bucket seats upholstered in classic tartan. This is complemented by carbon grey trim across the dashboard and door cards, along with a flat-bottomed leather-wrapped sports steering wheel.

Notice too that on the steering wheel now are actual physical buttons, which have made a blessed return on this Mk8.5 Golf. Other quality of life touches that VW has made included the touch panel below the infotainment display are also now backlit for better ease-of-use in the dark, while the central infotainment display itself now also has grown in size to 12.9 inches.

While on the topic of tech too, the Golf R-Line comes equipped with a 10-inch Digital Cockpit Pro fully digital instrument cluster with head-up display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 30-colour ambient lighting, three-zone automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, and a seven-speaker sound system.

Finally on the safety front, the Golf Mk8.5 R-Line is equipped with seven airbags and Volkswagen’s IQ.DRIVE suite of advanced driver assistance systems. These include autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian, cyclist and motorcyclist detection, adaptive cruise control with Travel Assist, rear cross-traffic alert with exit warning, park distance control, driver attention monitoring, and emergency lane keep assist.

Now… as expected of what has long been considered the more premium hatchback in its segment, the Golf R-Line does command a premium price of RM 185,990, inclusive of Volkswagen’s Assurance Package, which covers five years of free maintenance, a five-year or 150,000 km warranty, and five years of roadside assistance. The good news however is that the first 50 early birds will enjoy a RM 6,000 discount, bringing the price down to RM 179,990.
