The Many, Many Cool Cars On Showcase At Art of Speed 2024

Art of Speed 2024 is currently ongoing at MAEPS this weekend (27 & 28 July) from 10.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m

Art Of Speed 2024, Malaysia’s biggest annual Kustom & Counter Culture event, has returned for its 13th edition, and here are just some of the cooler metal on showcase that you could see if you make your way down to MAEPS this weekend!

The first thing that greets you at the door of Hall A is a vibrantly yellow classic Chevrolet Camaro all done up in the Mooneyes livery.

And right next to that is a custom bike with what is apparently an 678 cc air-cooled flat twin engine out of a Toyota Publica.

The Thai-registered brown Toyota Cressida wagon that starred at Retro Havoc makes another Malaysian appearance this year at Art of Speed 2024, resplendent with its Lexus LS400 1UZ V8 shoved under its hood. Oh, and next to it is a 50s Chevy panel van.

A Datsun, three Toyotas and a Saga just peeking out at the very end.

The bosozoku are out in force here at Art of Speed 2024. Let those extended exhaust pipes reach for the skies!

A row of Porsche 930 911s, with the vibrantly yellow RUF-badged flat nose featuring a pack of turbos poking out from beneath the whale tail round its rump!

Oh look, a thing! As in a Volkswagen Type 182 Thing! Nerd note here too, the type 181 refers to the left-hand drive versions of the Thing, while the Type 182 denotes right-hand drive.

A proper minter of a Mk III Ford Cortina, and this is the top-trim GXL (Grand Xtra Luxury) no less!

A very shiny silver BMW E21 3 Series, next to a DTM-fied W202-iteration Mercedes C-Class.

Now here’s something rather unique — a Modellista Caserta. Essentially a Toyota MR-2 with what its maker has dubbed in its marketing material as ‘styling with a Latin taste, plus an obsession with driving performance’. Only 150 examples were every made, with this automatic example bearing the plaque indicating that it was number 21 of 150.

An Alfa Romeo 164 QV, with it featuring a rather cheeky 3.2 badge on its rump that possibly indicates it perhaps features an enlarged Busso V6 from what originally came stock with it.

A 1967 Pontiac Trans Am, in proper Smokey and the Bandit spec. Alexa, play: East Bound and Down.

An early small rear light Volkswagen Beetle, riding on Porsche Fuch alloys and lowered to have its chromed bumpers nearly kiss the ground.

One can already imagine the noise that comes from this yellow turbo-ed K-swapped Civic as it flys by: brap braaaaap braaaaaaaap, stu stu stuuu stuu

Yet another K-swapped Honda, with this one naturally aspirated K20 in a rather cleanly modified Civic EG coupe.

A rather rare G-Wagon in Malaysia, with this being a humble older gen G300 (complete with exposed front tow hook on the bumper and rear tow hitch!) instead of the usual AMG-fied models roaming the commonly seen roaming the concrete jungle of KL.

…but why buy a G-Wagon in the first place, when all your outdoor needs could be satisfied in a much cooler way by this W124 E-Class with a roof tent!

An itasha (car decorated with images of characters) dekatora (decorated truck) keijidosha (kei car). The subtle wave pattern used for the base livery and interior upholstery is actually rather neat too.

A sleek silver Honda NS-X… with a four-speed automatic.

The Toyota Celica Mafiyah, featuring a 4A-GE 20-valve black top to match its jet black paint.

To paraphrase what the great Shakira once said, those hips on this pair of RWB 911s certainly don’t lie.

A Nissan R34 GT-R V-Spec II S-Tune, in Bayside Blue.

The 77-77 on the Japanese plate and the Rotosun are to be clear hints to the 13B rotary motor that powers this police-liveried Nissan sedan. The plastic rotor that have been screwed atop the strut towers are a nice touch too.

A Hakosuka Skyline GT-R (or at least a rather convincing clone of one anyway).

…and next to it meanwhile is something probably even rarer these days: a C10 Skyline wagon!

…and around the corner from that too is a mustard yellow Datsun Sunny California, with the old style Malaysian number plates.

Taking a short break from cars now, here are some petrol-powered custom scooters.

A Euro Honda Accord Tourer, complete with colour-matched roof box to fit anything else extra that its gigantic rear could not fit.

A pair of Mazdas ready for some outdoor living.

Moondisks on a Mooneyes-themed Honda kei van, as emphasised by the cover on its roof top tent.

The star car of the 2nd Official Hot Wheels Collectors Convention Malaysia — a red, white and blue liveried Honda Civic with a retro Turbo script down the side.

A Honda Jazz with a massive splitter up front, aerodisks and flared fenders down the side, and a roof tent up above. For when you want a racer and camper all in one car.

A Mercedes-Benz GLC with a plexiglass engine cover alá Corvette ZR1. Unlike the ‘Vette though, there is unfortunately no V8 underneath it.

A quick roundup of the few other Vintage VWs on show, including a Type 3 fastback!

Hope they got the owner’s permission for this…

A few final random shots of everything else seen at the show!

The AOS 2024 weekend pass is available at the door and online for RM35.00 (excluding RM 3 processing fee), with children below 12 years old entering for free. OKU (disabled) Pass Holders will also enjoy free entry. New for 2024 is the option for Valet VIP Parking Ticket, which for RM 30, visitors can park their cars at Ground Level in Hall D and it is valid for one-day entry.
