2026 Volvo EX90 To Soon Launch Locally With 800 V Architecture

This newly-updated Volvo flagship e-SUV brings with it faster charging and better infotainment tech.

Despite having been on sale here for only a little over a year, the Volvo EX90 is already receiving a rather substantial behind-the-scenes refresh. This flagship Scandinavian e-SUV will be landing locally in the coming weeks with a new 800V electrical architecture under the skin, not to mention a few tech upgrades in the cockpit.

Starting first with the switch to 800V, the doubling in voltage from the outgoing 400V architecture now allows the EX90 to charge much faster. Where the outgoing model can handle up to 250 kW of DC charging power, the updated version can accept up to 350 kW.

This means that while the 111 kWh battery is carried over for a similar WLTP-rated range of 623 km, its 10–80% charging time drops from 30 to just 22 minutes. The new 800V architecture also allows up to 250 km of range to be added in 10 minutes on a capable DC fast charger, versus 180 km previously, while AC charging remains capped at 11 kW.

Incidentally, the move to 800V also enables more power to be sent to the electric motors. The new flagship Twin Motor Performance powertrain now packs a supercar-rivalling 680 PS, up significantly from the 517 PS of the outgoing model.

Interestingly however, combined torque has actually dropped by 30 Nm, from 910 Nm to 870 Nm. Despite this, the 800V EX90 can somehow still crack the century sprint in just 4.2 seconds, almost a second quicker than the outgoing model’s 4.9-second time.

Elsewhere, the EX90 will also share its sedan sibling’s new core computer, featuring dual Nvidia Drive AGX Orin chips. This is used to support in-car artificial intelligence (AI) functions, as well as improve the functionality of various safety features. These behind-the-scenes updates will not exactly be easy to spot, however, as the exterior remains virtually identical to the outgoing model.

The updated model coming our way is expected to be locally assembled alongside the ES90, with the potential for it to be slightly more affordable than the current China-imported model, which is priced at RM442,888. Registrations of interest for the new EX90 are now open in Malaysia, with Volvo Car Malaysia (VCM) saying the first 100 customers to place an order will be specially rewarded.
