BYD Is Apparently Mulling An Entry Into Formula 1

BYD is studying an F1 and World Endurance Championship entry as part of its wider global brand push.
While there has been plenty of bru-hah-hah about Formula One adding another team to its pre-existing 10-team lineup, the recent entry of Cadillac may have opened the floodgates. And a rather sizeable whale could soon be circling the waters too, as BYD has reportedly expressed interest in entering the pinnacle of motorsport.

Yes, in a move aimed at strengthening its global brand appeal, reports have recently surfaced suggesting the Chinese automotive giant is studying a move into top-tier motorsport. It is worth noting however that Formula One is not the only championship under consideration, as BYD is also believed to be evaluating a potential programme in the FIA World Endurance Championship.
According to people familiar with the matter cited by Bloomberg, the world’s largest electric vehicle manufacturer is currently examining several possible pathways into competitive racing. These range from establishing a works team from scratch to acquiring an existing outfit already competing at the highest levels of the sport, much like Audi recently did when it took full control of the Sauber operation to facilitate its own entry into Formula One.

The reported interest in F1 also comes amid BYD’s rapid international expansion, as the Chinese automaker continues pushing aggressively into markets across Europe, Latin America and other key automotive regions. A presence in global motorsport could therefore serve as a powerful marketing tool, particularly as the brand looks to position itself not merely as a mass-market EV producer but also as a serious performance and technology player.
There is also the matter of growing local enthusiasm for the sport. Formula One’s return to the Chinese Grand Prix at the Shanghai International Circuit in 2024 helped reignite interest in China following a five-year absence, while the prior presence of Zhou Guanyu as the first full-time Chinese driver in 2022 has further strengthened the nation’s connection to the championship.

Now aside from the championship’s ever-strengthening popularity too, Formula One has become increasingly attractive to manufacturers due to its growing emphasis on electrification. The sport’s upcoming 2026 power unit regulations place significantly greater importance on hybrid technology, with the electrical component expected to contribute roughly half of the total output of the powertrain.
Under these new rules, the MGU-K electric motor will produce up to 350 kW, nearly triple the 120 kW figure seen in current power units. Such a shift technically aligns closely with BYD’s expertise in electric drivetrains and battery technology, areas where the company has established itself as a global leader through its rapidly expanding EV and plug-in hybrid vehicle lineup.

Should BYD commit, it would represent a rare direct push by a Chinese manufacturer into the upper echelons of global motorsport. While companies from the country have occasionally competed internationally — including NIO securing the inaugural Formula E drivers’ title in 2015 — sustained factory-backed involvement at the very top level has remained limited to date.
And getting back to how BYD could realistically secure a spot on the paddock meanwhile, one possible route could involve acquiring the current Alpine team. Investors in the Enstone-based outfit have after all reportedly been seeking additional buyers for their stake, which could present a potential opportunity for a manufacturer looking to buy its way into the sport rather than starting entirely from scratch.
