Toyota Scoops Yet More ASEAN NCAP Safety Awards

7 models in the current Toyota lineup has been awarded an overall 5-star safety rating.

Toyota, the purveyors of safe and reliable automobiles, has once again lived up to that reputation by claiming yet another couple of awards at the most recent 2021 ASEAN NCAP Grand Prix. Scooping a total of 5 wins out of the 12 categories related to motor manufacturers and motor vehicles at this biannual event that was held virtually on the 16th of February.

Among the 5 awards to the won Japanese auto giant, three of which were ‘Excellent Award in Continuous Safety Improvement’ that were awarded the Corolla Altis, Hilux and Innova. The fourth award won by Toyota meanwhile was for the ‘Best Safety Performance Award for Safety Assist Systems’ that went to the Majesty (aka Granvia) luxury maxi-MPV.

Perhaps the most impressive of the 5 awards presented to Toyota though during this event was the ‘Excellent Award’ for the brand with the most 5-Star awards between 2019 and 2020. A total of 7 models in the Japanese automaker’s current lineup has received an overall 5-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating, a number which is incidentally greater than any other brand.

Speaking about the haul of ASEAN NCAP awards, President of UMW Toyota Motor, Ravindran K. said that these accolades ‘confirm the approach of Toyota Synergized Mobility to bring to the forefront the technological leadership of Toyota that will be used to make ever better cars’. “Today, many of our models sold in Malaysia have Toyota Safety Sense, an Integrated Safety Management Concept where individual safety technologies and systems are designed to collaborate with each other in various vehicle operation stages, from parking to advanced safety, pre-collision safety, collision safety and rescue,” he added.

For those unfamiliar with ASEAN NCAP, this organisation is a collaboration between the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) and Global NCAP. Established in 2011 in response to the United Nations’ Decade of Action for Road Safety, it has been conducting crash tests at its own facility in Melaka, as well as the facilities of affiliated safety organisations in Asia, to provide consumers with information on the safety performance of the vehicles sold within the ASEAN region.

PRESS RELEASE: Toyota received multiple awards for its best-in-class safety technologies as well as the ‘Excellent Award’ as the brand with the most 5-Star awards (2019 – 2020). Over the last 2 years, the Toyota brand has received an overall 5-star rating for seven of its vehicle models – a number that is greater than any other brand.

Due to ongoing pandemic conditions in the region, the 4th ASEAN NCAP Grand Prix Awards announced on 16 February 2021 was conducted online. The biannual event of the New Car Assessment Programme for Southeast Asian Countries (better known as ASEAN NCAP) has the aim at commemorating high achievers in car safety in the ASEAN region.

For decades, Toyota has been fully committed to continuously enhancing its vehicle safety. Apart from the design of the vehicles, Toyota has also developed many new and advanced technologies that have not just enhanced protection but also set new standards for the auto industry.

“Toyota is committed to continuously improving its vehicle safety technologies and performance, as part of its entire efforts toward road and traffic safety, with focus on three essential elements- vehicle (advancing safety technology), people (educating drivers, passengers and pedestrians towards traffic safety) and traffic environment (supporting safer traffic infrastructure),” said Akio Takeyama, Deputy Chairman of UMW Toyota Motor.

Of the 12 categories relating to motor manufacturers and motor vehicles, Toyota won in five of the categories. Popular models such as the Corolla Altis, Hilux and Innova were recipients of the Excellent Awards for Continuous Safety Improvement in their respective segments, while the Majesty/Granvia were recognized with the Best Safety Performance Award for Safety Assist Systems.

“The awards from ASEAN NCAP confirm the approach of Toyota Synergized Mobility to bring to the forefront the technological leadership of Toyota that will be used to make ever better cars,” said Ravindran K., President of UMW Toyota Motor. “Today, many of our models sold in Malaysia have Toyota Safety Sense, an Integrated Safety Management Concept where individual safety

ASEAN NCAP is a collaborative effort between the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) and Global NCAP. Established in 2011, it marked a new milestone of vehicle safety for the region in response to the United Nations’ Decade of Action for Road Safety.

Over the past 10 years, ASEAN NCAP has focussed on popular models made and sold in the ASEAN region to provide consumers with information on the safety performance of the vehicles. It conducts crash tests at its own facility in Melaka as well as facilities of affiliated safety organisations in Asia.
