There Are Already 25,000+ BYDs On The Road In Malaysia

This is all the more impressive when considering BYD first landed in Malaysia just 3 short years ago.
While it may come as no surprise given that their cars are now a common sight on Malaysian roads, it is nevertheless impressive that BYD recently announced over 25,000 of their vehicles are already here. And perhaps what makes this milestone even more remarkable is that it only took them three short years to achieve it, with the Chinese automaker first handling operations locally in 2022.
In fact, it is notable that this Chinese automaker is now among the 10 best-selling car brands in Malaysia. And with its current fully-electric lineup, it should come as no surprise that BYD is also the country’s most popular EV brand to date.

Now looking back, BYD’s journey in Malaysia began with the Atto 3’s launch in December 2022. As one of the first EVs from a Chinese automaker on our shores, this e-SUV really marked the start of the fully-electric and Sino wave we’re seeing today.

Next up from the Atto 3 meanwhile was the Dolphin hatchback in mid-2023, which for a time was among the most affordable new ways to enter EV ownership in Malaysia. Early 2024 in turn saw the arrival of the Seal sedan, which has since gained a facelifted version just a couple of months back.

And speaking of the Seal, BYD had also just brought along its Seal 6 over here in September of this year. This more affordable alternative to its namesake certainly made waves from its sticker price, with this Civic-sized sedan bearing a City-sized price tag that started from just RM 100,000.

Rounding up the BYD lineup is the Atto 2 compact crossover that debuted a few months back. Those who prefer bigger BYDs instead currently have the M6 MPV and Sealion 7 SUV to choose from, while those who really want to go all out have the luxury of choosing the D9 from BYD’s premium Denza sub-brand.

Looking ahead, BYD and Sime Motors’ 2026 roadmap will focus on establishing CKD local assembly operations. Announced in August, a 600,000 sqm factory will be built at KLK TechPark in Tanjong Malim, with production expected to start in the second half of 2026.
As for new models, BYD had recently previewed the Shark 6 PHEV pickup. Its official arrival remains a bit uncertain, reportedly delayed due to government restrictions.
