Xpeng To Kickstart Local Assembly In Malaysia With EPMB

The first Xpeng models to be assembled in Malaysia will be the all-electric G6 SUV and X9 MPV.
Much like many other Chinese EV makers these days, Xpeng has joined the CKD bandwagon, announcing plans to locally assemble its vehicles here in Malaysia. Partnering with EP Manufacturing Berhad (EPMB), production is set to commence at the company’s Melaka plant by mid-2026.
Leading the charge (pun intended) on Xpeng’s local assembly endeavours over here will be its curvy all-electric G6 SUV, which is scheduled to start rolling out in Melaka as early as March 2026. This will then be followed by the more cubist X9 MPV, with apparently CKD plans afoot for both its fully electric form, as its range-extender variant.

This CKD initiative with EPMB marks Xpeng’s third local assembly operation globally, following similar efforts in Austria and Indonesia. Notably, the latter was the brand’s first in ASEAN, while Malaysia represents Xpeng’s first right-hand-drive (RHD) assembly line. The Melaka facility is also expected to serve as a manufacturing hub for RHD markets across the wider ASEAN region.
“Establishing local production in Malaysia is a significant milestone in Xpeng’s global strategy and underscores our long-term commitment to the ASEAN region. EPMB’s proven capabilities and shared vision make them an ideal partner. This initiative allows us to be closer to our customers, accelerate market responsiveness and systematically introduce our intelligent technologies,” said Xpeng vice president James Wu.

Echoing this, EPMB founder and executive chairman Hamidon Abdullah added, “This strategic alliance combines EPMB’s over four decades of automotive manufacturing excellence and local insights with Xpeng’s cutting-edge intelligence and electrification innovations. Together, we are committed to delivering high-quality, intelligent EVs to Malaysian consumers and supporting the nation’s sustainable industrial ambitions.”

Xpeng currently has two models on sale locally, namely the G6 and X9. The former was recently facelifted, bringing with it subtle exterior and interior updates to complement a comprehensive underbody overhaul. Key highlights include support for ultra-high-power DC fast charging at up to 451 kW, along with a modest bump in output.
Locally, the facelifted G6 range has dropped the previous base Standard Range variant, with the line-up now starting with the RWD Long Range Pro priced at RM 178,888. The update also marks the debut of a dual-motor variant via the AWD Performance, which retails at RM 189,888. Buyers can also opt for the Black Edition for an additional RM 4,000, bringing the price to RM 193,888.
As for the X9 E-MPV, this all-electric Alphard alternative starts from RM 269,888 for the Standard Range 2WD Pro. This variant comes with an 84.5 kWh LFP battery pack, which is good for up to 500 km of range on a full charge. Stepping up, the Long Range 2WD Pro is priced at RM 287,888, while the range-topping Long Range 2WD Pro Plus goes for RM 299,888. Both of these feature a larger 101.5 kWh NMC battery that extends the WLTP-rated range by a further 90 km.

And for those who have stuck around this long and may still be wondering why the EPMB name sounds familiar, that’s because the company currently contract-assembles vehicles for GWM. Its current CKD line-up includes the Haval H6 HEV SUV, with the Wey G9 PHEV MPV set to follow soon.

In fact, GWM and Xpeng aren’t the only brands tapping EPMB’s expertise. MG has also recently partnered with the firm for the imminent local assembly of its S5 SUV, while BAIC was previously reported to have engaged EPMB for contract manufacturing duties as well… though that effort (and the brand’s local launch) has since gone rather quiet.
