Ex-Rolls-Royce Distributor Soon To Sell The Chinese Equivalent

The Quill Group has just been appointed the official Malaysian distributor for Chinese luxury brand Hongqi.
While there is still much uncertainty surrounding the current fate of Rolls-Royce in Malaysia, its former local distributor nevertheless appears to already be moving on to new ventures. The Quill Group though is not exactly straying far from the ultra-luxury space, as it has recently signed a deal to represent what could be described as the Double R’s Chinese equivalent.
Yes, Chinese luxury automaker Hongqi is set to make its Malaysian debut under Quill Group. A memorandum of understanding (MOU) recently signed between both parties will see Quill oversee the appointment of authorised dealerships nationwide, while also providing full after-sales support and parts availability. The brand is currently slated for a local launch by mid-2026.

Interestingly too, the agreement grants Quill Group exclusive rights as the official importer and distributor for both Completely Built-Up (CBU) and Completely Knocked-Down (CKD) units in Malaysia. This strongly hints at potential local assembly plans for China’s oldest automaker here, with a contract manufacturing arrangement likely to be announced in due course.
“We are immensely proud to be entrusted with introducing Hongqi to Malaysia. It is a uniquely special brand with a storied legacy, favoured by leaders and recognised globally for its uncompromising quality. With Malaysia’s robust bilateral relationship with China established since 1974, it is fitting that we are chosen as one of the premier right-hand drive markets for Hongqi’s strategic expansion,” said Quill Group managing director Jennifer Low in a statement.

With a name that literally translates to ‘red flag’, Hongqi is perhaps best known for producing the official state cars for leaders and dignitaries in China. The brand, a subsidiary of FAW Group, was initially established in 1958 to fulfil Mao Zedong’s desire for a domestically produced alternative to foreign luxury limousines.
And for those still held in the highest regard by the state, there remains access to Hongqi’s ultra-exclusive Golden Sunflower range. This is where the Rolls-Royce comparison becomes most apparent, as models like the neo-retro Hongqi L5 (also known as the Guoli) is essentially China’s direct answer to the Rolls-Royce Phantom.

Incidentally, there is actually already one such L5 in Malaysia. The Yang di-Pertuan Agong reportedly became one of the first owners globally of the second-generation ultra-luxury limousine, taking delivery in early 2024.

That said, the models most Malaysians are likely to encounter will sit further down the range. Quill Group is expected to introduce Hongqi’s more accessible lineup of luxury sedans and SUVs, including the Hongqi H9 and Hongqi E-HS9. These span various levels of electrification, but all feature the brand’s signature (and unmistakably Rolls-Royce-esque) waterfall-style grille.
