Suzuki Showcases Its New Rugged-Looking Spacia Gear Kei Van
This new Suzuki Spacia Gear comes with optional accessories that include an awning and a pet carrier.
Kei car campers rejoice, as Suzuki has since showed off its recently refreshed Spacia Gear. This new rugged version of kei crossover van comes shortly after the Japanese automaker revealed the third iteration of its Spacia, that made its debut at the Tokyo Mobility Show last year.
In terms of exterior aesthetic here, the new Spacia Gear certainly has went with a more miniature jeep vibe for its frontal design this time round, as it ditches the honeycomb grille design of its prior iteration for thick chromed vertical slats that is bookended by a pair of round headlights. A more sculpted bumper featuring a sleeker X-shaped design has since given this kei Suzuki a sleeker look than its predecessor too, while its new silver-painted brush guard poking out beneath aims to steer the design back to a more rugged feel.
Now aside from the brush guard up front, the rear of this new Spacia Gear also nets a similarly silver painted piece round its rump. The sides of this Suzuki kei crossover van further features satin silver rubbing strips on the lower quarter of its doors (accented by orange Gear decals), in addition to a set of 15-inch alloy wheels finished in gunmetal grey and roof rails on its two-tone roof.
As for what lies within meanwhile, the interior of this new Spacia Gear is to be much the same as to be found in the new Spacia. Though with this being the Spacia for the adventurer, it does nevertheless benefit from some nature-inspired cabin accent hues, water-repellent fabric upholstery for its seats, and a durable cargo space cover for its lip-less boot floor. Suzuki has also since made available with this variant of Spacia the option of a heated steering wheel option and extra USB ports for charging, which will be useful for camping in the Spacia Gear.
And while on the topic of camping, Suzuki will indeed sell any buyer of this kei crossover van a load of accessories to make it possible. Among the more notable bits of kit from the factory available with the Spacia Gear includes a retractable awning, mosquito nets for the doors, as well as a ‘Relax cushion’ set that transforms the interior into a double bed.
Suzuki hasn’t yet revealed the technical specifications of the new Spacia Gear thus far, in addition to how much this particular kei crossover van will cost. The regular Spacia is however available with a mild-hybrid 660cc three-cylinder that produces either 49 PS or 82 PS, paired to a CVT that drives either the front or all four wheels.
The rivals to the Spacia Gear in the adventure-ready kei car segment include the Mitsubishi Delica Mini and the Daihatsu Fanto Funcross, with Suzuki incidentally also having in its lineup the Hustler Tough Wild for those who want a more macho-looking but mechanically identical alternative. Though those who want to go for a proper adventure in a kei car, do note that there is actually a variant of Jimny in Japan (that does away with its fender flares and featuring tucked-in bumpers) that is fully compliant with current keijidosha regulations!
