Suzuki Japan Raked In 50,000 Orders For Its Jimny 5 Door In Just 4 Days
The orders received by Suzuki Japan for the Jimny 5 Door in just 4 days has already exceeded its monthly allocation by nearly 42 times.
While it many might see it as an overpriced off-roading toy, there are still many, many people who want a Suzuki Jimny. And this seems especially true in Japan, as in just four short days after announcing the launch of the 5-door variant (dubbed the Nomade) in its home market, the Japanese automaker was already staring down the barrel at a whopping 50,000 orders over there!
What more is that given the production output for Japan was to be capped at a modest 1,200 units per month, buyers can therefore currently expect to wait roughly three and a half years before their new off-roader eventually arrives. It is hence no surprise then that Suzuki has since temporarily suspended orders for this hot new product, and is likely currently scrambling to find a solution in satiating this overwhelming demand from its home market.
In a post made on its official website, Suzuki has issued the following apology to potential buyers caught in this backlog:
“We apologise to customers considering the purchase of the Jimny Nomade due to the suspension of orders. Thank you very much for your interest in our products. The Jimny Nomade has been very well received, and we have received orders that far exceed our production capacity.
As a result, we will be temporarily suspending orders. We will provide updates on when orders will reopen, considering the future production situation. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding.”
The first batch of Jimny Nomades are currently slated to only be delivered to the first few Japanese customers come early April. These 5-door off-roaders will incidentally come all the way from Suzuki’s Gurugram plant in India, which is at present the only place where it is produced in the world.
While the 5-door Jimny is to be the same height (1,730 mm) and width (1,645 mm) as its 3-door counterpart, it adds a useful 340 mm in length (to 3,850 mm), mostly to its wheelbase. This new-found stretch between its wheels adds some much needed rear legroom and a significantly larger cargo area to this pint-sized off-roader, with the latter aspect having more than doubled in size from just 85 to 211 litres (and then 332 litres with the rear seats folded).
Retained under the hood of the five-door Jimnys are the same longitudinally-mounted 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine with 102 PS and 130 Nm of torque as its three-door counterpart, to which is mated a four-speed conventional automatic transmission or a five-speed manual. The Nomade starts at a surprisingly cheap ¥2,651,000 (RM 76,000) for the stick shift, before rising to ¥2,750,000 (RM 79,000) for the self-shifter.
Interestingly, these Japanese-market 5-door Jimny Nomades net the Suzuki Safety Support ADAS suite. This in turn sees for this off-roader come with features such as adaptive cruise control with traffic sign recognition, lane departure warning, pedestrian detection, as well as front and rear autonomous emergency braking.
And just as a funny aside at the end of this story here, Suzuki has actually also since canceled all planned exhibition events for the Jimny Nomade in Japan. Perhaps because it has realised that it needn’t spend any more money on marketing, in the face of such stratospheric demand?
