Porsche 911 Club Coupe Sells For USD1.2 Million At Auction

Why would someone pay so much for a relatively common Porsche 911 though?

German automaker, Porsche, celebrates its 75th Anniversary this year and to celebrate, the brand held an auction with a bunch of classic Porsche’s to find new owners but one in particular piqued our interest, a classic 1999 Porsche 911 Club Coupe which fetched USD 1.2 million including its 12 percent buyers fee, but why?

The 1999 Porsche 911 Classic Club Coupe was sold to a 30-year Porsche Club of America (PCA) member. The auction was hosted by Broad Arrow Auctions and the classic 911 was sold at the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta shortly before 2pm. However, what makes this specific car so special? It is, after all, pretty common.

Moreover, this particular 996-generation 911 was the result of a collaboration between the PCA, Porsche AG, Porsche Classic, Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur, and Porsche Cars North America. Starting as a tired 1999 911, it was transformed in its “restomod” restoration by Porsche Classic Restoration in Stuttgart.

This essentially means that the buyer receives a classic Porsche 996 that is acknowledged by Porsche AG to be a factory car. Documentation of the Classic 911 Club Coupe is archived in the Porsche museum, and this historic sale of a Porsche Classic restomod will be filed away, ending this chapter of the car’s life.

This is practically the main reason behind the exorbitant price of the Porsche but is this enough to justify the USD1.2 million price tag?

After all, as we have already established, the car itself is pretty much just a common sight at this point. Is it really worth that much? I don’t think so but surely the buyer knew what they were doing.

On top of that, while many see the 996 generation of this water cooled Porsche  in general as the least desirable of all the generations, mainly as a result of its oddly shaped headlights, I think the restored car sold at the auction looks extremely good and while I would not have spent USD1.2 million on it myself, I can see why the new owner did.

Well, Porsche is celebrating a milestone so honestly, many people would be content just being a part of the festivities.

Either way, what do you guys think about this? If you were given the chance, would you have also liked to purchase a classic Porsche 911 Club Coupe?

We got all this from the PCA and their full article is linked here.
