Hyundai Teases All-New Bayon Subcompact Crossover

This new Bayon subcompact crossover will sit below the Kona in the Hyundai SUV lineup.

Hyundai has teased the imminent arrival of its new Bayon subcompact crossover in a new set of images released recently. Set to sit beneath the Kona, this new B-segment crossover is poised to be the South Korean automaker’s new entry point in its SUV range.

Speaking of the Kona, the smaller Bayon looks to borrow a not insignificant amount of styling cues from its recently facelifted bigger brother, especially at the front. Going from the teaser images, this front of this new Hyundai subcompact crossover will feature a slim air intake and daytime running lights up top, with a gaping grille and a separated headlight cluster further down.

Continuing round the back, the Bayon continues Hyundai’s Sensuous Sportiness design language with arrow-shaped tail lights that is linked by thin red line. An exaggerated version of those seen on the Elantra, these full width rear lighting signature is further highlighted by a contrasting black boot panel.

As for the interior, there has yet to be any official information in that department. However being a Hyundai, it is safe to expect a suitably tech-laden cabin with all the prerequisite connectivity features and advanced driver aids to come as standard with the Bayon.

There has been no word thus far too on the powertrain specs of the Bayon, though taking its similarly-sized i20 as a baseline, a raft of small capacity petrol engines should be on the cards for this subcompact crossover. Drive meanwhile is expected to solely be sent to the front wheels, through either a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed dual clutch transmission depending on engine option selected.

Named Bayon in reference to the French city of Bayonnee, this subcompact crossover is set to compete against its segment rivals like the Toyota Yaris Cross and the Ford Puma. Launching soon within the first half of the year, more concrete information regarding this upcoming model should be available in the coming weeks and months.

PRESS RELEASE: Hyundai Motor has released new images of its all-new B-segment crossover SUV, Bayon. A series of low-light images reveals a wide and connected design with a clean, high-tech look.

Additionally, the company has confirmed that Bayon will be the latest model to incorporate its Sensuous Sportiness design identity, which combines emotional value with innovative design solutions.

The front features an air intake band stretching across the entire front of the vehicle and wide, narrow DRLs generate width. The broad front grille opens at the bottom, creating a solid stance. The headlamps are separated from the DRLs, creating a unique light architecture for a distinctive look.

The rear of the vehicle features arrow-shaped brake lights connected by a thin red line. Positioned far out to the sides, these lamps enhance the visual impression of width, making the rear graphic even more outstanding.

Bayon will be available in the first half of 2021. More information will be revealed in the coming weeks.
