Five-Door Suzuki Jimny Launched Locally Costing RM 199,380

This new variant of Suzuki Jimny to land locally adds two extra doors for an additional RM 25,000.

The official Suzuki distributors in Malaysia, Naza Eastern Motors, has recently debuted the (first-ever!) five-door variant of its Jimny off-roader over here. This more practical version of the existing Japan-import 3-door 4×4 comes from India this time round, and it lands locally wearing a price tag that starts from RM 199,300.

Now starting with the dimensions first of this stretched Suzuki, the Jimny 5-door is to be the same height (1,730 mm) and width (1,645 mm) as its three-door counterpart, but adds 340 mm in length (to 3,850 mm), mostly to its wheelbase. This new-found stretch between the wheels has added some much needed rear legroom and a significantly larger cargo area to this pint-sized off-roader, with the latter aspect having more than doubled in size from just 85 to 211 litres (and then 332 litres with the rear seats folded).

As all the added length goes in between the wheels, the off-roader’s clearance angles are expectedly minimally affected. The five-door Jimny quotes an approach and departure angle of 36º (-1º from the three door) and 47º (-2º) respectively, while its break-over angle stands at 24º (-4º) with a ground clearance of 210 mm (unchanged).

Retained under the hood of this five-door Jimny is the same longitudinally-mounted 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine with 102 PS and 130 Nm of torque as its three-door counterpart, to which is mated a four-speed conventional automatic transmission in these officially locally-available variants. The added metal from this stretch however has seen this more practical Suzuki gain an extra 75 kg in heft, which in turn sees for its 0-100 km/h time grow to a leisurely 17.2 seconds, before topping out at the same 140 km/h.

Underneath this five-door Jimny is still to be the same ladder-frame chassis and three-link rigid-axle suspension as its shorter sibling. The off-road kit available on this lengthened 4×4 meanwhile matches its three-door as well, with it featuring Suzuki’s AllGrip Pro part-time four-wheel-drive system with a low-range transfer case (2H, 4H and 4L) and LSD Traction Control Brake to help this off-roader better tackle the rougher terrain.

Aside from the two extra doors, there really is not much to distinguish this five-door Jimny apart from its shorter sibling. This Suzuki features a pair of round LED projector headlights with washer function flanking its 5-slot grille up front, 15-inch dark grey alloys (shod in Bridgestone Dueler H/L tyres) and electrically-adjustable wing mirrors down its side, with a reverse camera peeking out from beneath its exposed tailgate-mounted spare tyre behind.

Moving on within, the new 9.0-inch touchscreen head unit (with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity) on this five-door is two inches larger than what came before. Do note that this new Jimny is still strictly to be a four-seater, with no middle seatbelt for its 50:50 split folding rear seats.

Safety and convenience features on this Jimny five-door includes automatic air-conditioning, cruise control, dual front airbags, side airbags, curtain airbags, anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic stability program ESP, hill-hold control, and brake assist function. Colour options with this off-roader meanwhile ranges from single-tone Bluish Black Pearl, Granite Grey Metallic and Jungle Green, to a pair of two-tone hues Sizzling Red Metallic + Bluish Black Pearl and Chiffon Ivory Metallic + Bluish Black Pearl.

After the unveiling, Naza Automotive Group CEO, Rizal Jailan emphasised the strategic importance of the unveiling, stating, “The introduction of the 5-door Jimny underscores our commitment to diversifying our product portfolio with profitable niche models that meet evolving automotive trends. This move aligns with our broader strategy to solidify our market presence and cater to the increasing demand for compact, versatile SUVs in Malaysia.”

He continued, “The SUV segment in Malaysia has experienced substantial growth over the past decade. Our continued focus on iconic models like the Jimny and the Swift Sport has resonated strongly with our customers. The new 5-door Jimny not only expands our offerings but also reaffirms our dedication to delivering vehicles that embody quality, reliability, and style.”

Rizal highlighted the broader business implications, noting, “This launch is a testament to our ability to adapt and innovate in a competitive market. By introducing the 5-door Jimny, we aim to capture a large share of the SUV market and provide our customers with a vehicle that meets their lifestyle and practical needs. Our sales target for the new Jimny is to achieve 100 units within the first year.”

Naza Eastern has also since announced its national network expansion ambitions, with it planning to open a branch in Penang in September, before following that up with three new dealerships in Batu Caves, Kuantan, and Kuching. It is further hinted that the company aims to introduce at least one new Suzuki model annually, focusing on the growing SUV market.
