SUVs today are expected to do more than just look tough. Many owners still use them mainly around town, but having some off-road ability can be useful when the road gets rough. This is where Omoda and JAECOO have focused some of their SUV development, especially with models such as the JAECOO J7 and J8.
While Omoda puts more focus on modern crossover designs, JAECOO models are designed with rougher roads and off-road driving in mind.
All-Wheel Drive and Driving Modes
One of the main features used in JAECOO’s off-road models is the ARDIS, or All-Road Drive Intelligent System. The system monitors traction and adjusts how power is delivered depending on the surface.
Depending on the model, the system can provide different driving modes for conditions such as sand, mud, snow, ice and rocky terrain. These modes change the throttle and traction control settings to help the vehicle maintain grip.
Ground Clearance and Water Wading
Ground clearance is also important when driving away from paved roads. The JAECOO models mentioned here have around 200 mm of ground clearance, giving them more space underneath when driving over rocks, ruts and other obstacles.
The vehicles can also have a claimed wading depth of up to 600 mm. This can be useful when dealing with flooded roads or shallow water crossings, although drivers still need to consider the actual conditions before entering deep water.
The approach and departure angles also help when going over steep sections. The JAECOO J7 has a claimed 21-degree approach angle and 29-degree departure angle.
Turbocharged Power
The JAECOO J7 is powered by a 1.6-litre TGDI turbocharged engine producing 197 hp and 290 Nm of torque, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.
That amount of torque gives the SUV enough low-end power for situations such as climbing slopes or travelling over uneven surfaces. Some higher-spec and PHEV versions also use electric motors, which can provide additional torque at low speeds.
Camera and Off-Road Technology
Another useful feature is the 540-degree panoramic camera system. It combines the usual 360-degree view with a transparent chassis function, allowing the driver to see areas underneath the vehicle on the central display.
This can help when driving over rocks, tree roots or other obstacles that are difficult to see from the driver’s seat.
Overall, Omoda and JAECOO SUVs are not just designed for city driving. Models such as the JAECOO J7 and J8 come with features aimed at improving traction, ground clearance and driver visibility when the road becomes more difficult.
They may still spend most of their time on normal roads, but the added off-road hardware gives them more ability when conditions get rough.
