MG4 Lands Locally From RM 104k. Here’s ALL You Need To Know.

This new MG4 lands in Malaysia as part of MG’s local debut lineup, with prices starting from just RM 104,000.

Alongside the ZS EV SUV, MG has also brought along it’s MG4 to fill its local premiere lineup. A car that has been a huge commercial success (this model after all currently holds the title as Europe’s best selling small EV), here therefore all you need to know about the (seriously affordable!) Malaysian version of this Golf-sized fully-electric hatchback.

Dimensions

Starting first with the size of the MG4, this EV is classed as a C-segmenter and comes in at 4,287 mm long, 1,836 mm wide, 1,504 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,705 mm. For context, this is about equivalent to a Volkswagen Golf, which itself measures 4,284 mm in length, 1,789 mm in width, 1,491 mm in height with a wheelbase of 1,491 mm.

More pertinently in terms of practicality from its dimensions is for this 5-seat e-hatchback to pack a decent 363 litres of boot space, which grows up to 1,177 litres (1,165 litres for the Extended Lux trim) when the 60:40-split rear seats are folded down. A dual-height adjustable boot floor is also present for added practicality, though there is unfortunately to be no stowage up front regardless of which powertrain option is selected.

Powertrain & Battery Specs

And conveniently on the subject of powertrains, the MG4 lands locally in 3 standard flavours. All of which feature a single rear mounted motor, but thanks to three different battery sizes available, each variant has its own power and range figures.

MG4 Standard

  • Power: 170 kW (125 PS)
  • Torque: 250 Nm
  • 0 – 100km/h: 7.5 seconds
  • Top Speed: 160 km/h
  • Battery Capacity: 51 kWh
  • Range (WLTP): 350 km
  • Estimated Charging Time: 7.9 hours 10 – 100% @ 7 kW AC (maximum), 39 minutes 10 – 80% @ 150 kW DC (maximum)

MG4 Lux

  • Power: 203 kW (150 PS)
  • Torque: 250 Nm
  • 0 – 100km/h: 7.7 seconds
  • Top Speed: 160 km/h
  • Battery Capacity: 64 kWh
  • Range (WLTP): 435 km
  • Estimated Charging Time: 8.5 hours 10 – 100% @ 7 kW AC (maximum), 60 minutes 10 – 80% @ 150 kW DC (maximum)

MG4 Extended Lux

  • Power: 245 kW (180 PS)
  • Torque: 350 Nm
  • 0 – 100km/h: 6.1 seconds
  • Top Speed: 180 km/h
  • Battery Capacity: 77 kWh
  • Range (WLTP): 520 km
  • Estimated Charging Time: 10.3 hours 10 – 100% @ 7 kW AC (maximum), 39 minutes 10 – 80% @ 150 kW DC (maximum)

All MG4s land locally with one-pedal driving, 4 regenerative braking modes (Auto, 1, 2, 3) and a whopping 5 selectable driving modes (eco, snow, standard, custom, sport).

MG4 XPower

Though those who want a properly sporty MG4 will likely want to go with the XPower trim, which packs a more-than-decent combined 320 kW (435 PS) and 600 Nm from its motor at each axle. And despite its 1.8-tonne kerb weight too, this most powerful production MG to date could still rocket to the 100 km/h mark from a standstill in a (Smart #1) Brabus-beating 3.7 seconds, before going on to its 200 km/h top speed.

Feeding its twin motors in the XPower is to be the same 64 kWh pack as in the Lux variant, but its WLTP-claimed range is expectedly reduced to 385 km. Other associated performance tweaks made to this hot trim includes 25% stiffer springs, dampers and anti-roll bars, as well as 345 mm ventilated disks with orange calipers hiding behind 18-inch ‘Cyclone’ design alloy wheels.

Exclusive too with this flagship of the MG4 lineup are glossy lower body mouldings with silver inserts, while metal sports pedals complement its black leather-lined cabin with Alcantara accents. Oh, and just so drivers are sure to songlap anything this side of a 911, this XPower variant also packs launch control…

Colour Palette

The MG4 lands locally with a rather healthy mix of colourful hues, which includes Holborn blue, Volcano Orange and Dynamic Red. There is of course the less vibrant (and more resale friendly) options too, which encompasses Camden Grey, Monument Silver, Black Pearl and Arctic White. Racing Matte Green meanwhile is exclusive only to the XPower variant.

Pricing & Warranty

Prices for the MG4 in Malaysia are currently estimated to start at an incredulously affordable RM 104,000 for the Standard trim, with it climbing to RM 129,000 and RM 149,000 for the Lux and Extended Lux variants respectively. The XPower on the other hand caps off the range with a price tag of RM 159,000, which wipes the floor of its likely main rival in the form of the Smart #1 Brabus that retails for RM 249,000.

All MG4s are claimed to be imported straight from China, which is curious considering that these cars are already to be locally assembled in Thailand. In any case, MG is currently offering this EV with its MG Care warranty package, which encompasses 7 years or 150,000 km mileage (whichever comes first) warranty on the vehicle and 8 years or 180,000 km (whichever comes first) warranty on battery.

Bookings for the MG4 (and ZS EV) are set to open tomorrow (at time of writing) on February 29th, with interested parties able to learn more about the brand and its new models from the various promotional tours it is holding in the next coming days.
