BYD Malaysia Confirms No Local EVs Affected By China Recall

This comes after BYD China recalls nearly 100,000 EVs for a potential fire risk from their power steering system.

Sime Darby Motors, the official distributor of BYD vehicles in Malaysia, has recently released a statement to confirm that no BYD EVs locally were to be affected by the recent power steering recall issued by the automaker in China. The full statement from Sime Darby Motors reads as follows:

As the official distributor of BYD vehicles in Malaysia, Sime Darby Motors would like to reassure our valued customers that the BYD models sold in Malaysia are not affected by the recent recall announcement by BYD in China as it is limited exclusively to vehicles sold in the China market.

The announcement states, “BYD Auto Industry Co., Ltd. and BYD Automobile Co., Ltd. are recalling certain domestically produced Dolphin and Yuan PLUS electric vehicles.”

The batches and models recalled within the China mainland region do not pertain to markets outside of the China mainland region.

Now for those outside the loop here as to what is going on, BYD back in China had announced a recall for the electric power steering column assembly (CEPS) controller on nearly 97,000 Dolphin and Atto3 EVs. The affected vehicles were manufactured between November 2nd 2022 and December 26th 2023.

This recall is centred around defects in the production of said part, whereby closing equipment tool cover may interfere with the capacitors on the controller circuit board and cause micro-cracks in the capacitors. These cracks may then grow when the vehicle is in use, and could lead to short circuits, overheating, and in the worst case scenario vehicle fires.

The fix instructed by BYD to its dealers for this fault is to install insulation pads on the controllers. Affected vehicle owners will be notified by registered mail, WeChat, and phone calls. The automaker has also set up a customer service hotline for users affected by what is its largest-ever recall to date, with the repair naturally to be carried out free of charge.
