Turning Safety Into A Cultural Message

The Selamat campaign was introduced earlier this year as what initially appeared to be the arrival of a new automotive brand. Volvo used camouflaged vehicles, digital outdoor advertising and social media activity to create speculation before revealing that Selamat was actually a renewed expression of Volvo’s long-standing focus on safety.

The campaign built around the cultural meaning of the word “Selamat”, which Malaysians use regularly in greetings and expressions such as Selamat Pagi and Selamat Jalan. Volvo noted that the word is spoken more than 650 million times across the country, while also connecting it to the universal importance of protecting human life.

Rather than focusing on technical specifications, Volvo positioned safety around real-world experiences and the consequences of road accidents, particularly among young Malaysians. The campaign ultimately recorded a measurable response of 90.8%, strengthening the association between Volvo and the idea of safety.

Patricia Yaw, Sales & Marketing Director of Volvo Car Malaysia, said the campaign was designed to put human life at the centre of mobility rather than simply adding another safety claim to the automotive conversation.

Agencies Behind The Campaign

Volvo Car Malaysia worked with Invictus Blue, Grey Malaysia, Dox Digital, LAB Activations, Directors Think Tank and Live Experience to develop and execute the campaign across different platforms.

The campaign used digital content, creators and influencers to build curiosity before linking Selamat back to Volvo. Physical activations included the camouflaged fleet around Kuala Lumpur, the Selamat Drive at Sepang and the Selamat Crash Car, allowing consumers to experience Volvo’s safety message directly.

The campaign also relied heavily on online discussions and community engagement, helping transform the launch from a conventional automotive marketing campaign into a broader cultural conversation.

Following its Grand Effie victory, “Selamat is Volvo” could now have an opportunity to reach an international audience, while Volvo Car Malaysia plans to continue using Selamat as an ongoing platform.

Future activities are expected to include educational programmes, on-ground experiences and purpose-led initiatives focused on safer mobility and community well-being across Malaysia.
