BYD Global Sales Surge In February 2025 With Record Exports

BYD sold a total of 322,846 vehicles globally in February 2025, with 67,025 of them exported overseas.

BYD has recently announced that it has delivered 322,846 vehicles globally in February 2025, marking an 8.9% increase from January’s 296,446 units as the Chinese New Year holiday concluded. The Shenzhen-based automaker has incidentally also set a new export record with 67,025 vehicles shipped overseas last month, representing a dramatic 187.8% year-over-year growth.

This aforementioned February sales figures encompass all BYD-branded vehicles, along with its three major sub-brands. BYD-badged cars accounted for 304,673 units, while Denza contributed 8,513 units, Fang Cheng Bao added 4,942 units, and its Yangwang subsidiary sold 105 units.

Its impressive export performance continues a strong upward trajectory for BYD, with overseas sales continuing to increase for the third consecutive month since November. And in light of further supporting this international expansion, the Chinese automaker has aggressively expanded its shipping capacity, with plans to operate eight car carriers by 2026.

The Chinese automaker currently has four massive vessels in its fleet, including the recently launched BYD Shenzhen RoRo vessel that was undocked on January 16th in China. This gargantuan car carrier stretches 219 metres in length, and could carry a whopping 9,200 vehicles.

Now while the headline 165.2% year-over-year growth figure appears impressive, it is worth noting that comparing isolated February figures could be misleading due to the shifting dates of Chinese New Year, which follows the lunar calendar and typically falls between late January and mid-February.

Using the combined January and February data however, BYD still sold 614,679 vehicles in the first two months of 2025, representing a 90% increase from the 322,767 units sold during the same period last year. Export figures are equally strong too, with 133,361 vehicles shipped overseas in January-February 2025, up 124% from 59,465 units in the comparable period of 2024.

These results build on BYD’s strong 2024 performance, when the company sold 4.25 million passenger vehicles globally, up by 41% from 2023. Exports accounted for approximately 10% of total sales with 417,204 vehicles shipped internationally, representing 71.9% growth from the previous year.

Market analysts are currently projecting that BYD will reach approximately 5.5 million vehicle sales in 2025. For context, this will actually put them as the second best-selling automaker right behind Toyota, with Volkswagen selling just 4.93 million cars over the 12 months in 2024.

Since ceasing production of internal combustion engine vehicles in April 2022, BYD has focused exclusively on new energy vehicles. In 2024, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) comprised 42.3% of BYD’s sales, while plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) made up the remaining 57.7%.
