BYD has officially inaugurated an IDR 16 trillion (RM 3.7 billion) electric vehicle factory in Cipeundeuy District, Subang Regency, Indonesia.
Liu Xueliang, Vice President of BYD, stated that the company currently employs 5,000 local workers and plans to expand the workforce to 20,000 once full operational capacity is reached.
“We have built four major automotive manufacturing divisions here: stamping, welding, painting, and final assembly,” he said during the inauguration of the Subang facility on September 3rd.
Spanning 126 hectares, the facility has an annual production capacity of 150,000 vehicles. The entire manufacturing process is fully integrated within a single complex.
The factory produces the Atto 1, M6, and M6 DM models, alongside the luxury Denza D9 variant. Assembly relies on computer-controlled robotics, billed as among the world’s most advanced systems, while maintaining human workforce deployment across select production stages.
As part of the inauguration, BYD guided stakeholders on a factory tour to show its various manufacturing stages.
BYD Motor Indonesia President Director Eagle Zhao said BYD’s investment in Indonesia would not stop at the newly inaugurated vehicle manufacturing facility, but would also support the country’s electric vehicle ecosystem through battery-related manufacturing activities.
According to Eagle, the move is part of BYD’s efforts to increase local content, known as the Domestic Component Level (TKDN), in the vehicle production process.
Eagle said the Chinese manufacturer is also preparing to strengthen its human resource capabilities through training and technology transfer. He noted that last year, hundreds of technicians and engineers were sent to BYD’s R&D centre in China to learn about its technology.
Currently, Eagle said more than 5,000 domestic technicians have worked with BYD, with the number targeted to increase to 20,000 people.
Talent development is also being carried out through collaboration with a school in West Java. Graduates of the school will have the opportunity to participate in training provided by BYD, while the university recruitment process is also underway.
The presence of the BYD factory in Subang is therefore not only focused on vehicle production. The facility is also expected to serve as a platform for developing local workforce competencies, supporting technology transfer and expanding the electric vehicle ecosystem in Indonesia.
