First 20+ Units Of MG5 Have Been Delivered To Customers Locally

The MG5 is to still currently be available locally at its attractive introductory price of RM 83,900.

SAIC Motor Malaysia has recently celebrated a significant milestone with the MG5, with the delivery of the first 20+ units of this newly-launched B-segment sedan to local owners.

This batch delivery took place under much pomp and circumstance at MG Motor Glenmarie (Mega Galeri Sdn Bhd), with the management from SAIC Motor Malaysia present to celebrate this milestone with the 20+ owners who were gathered there.

“The MG5 has truly resonated with a segment of buyers who prioritise style and individuality, and we’re thrilled to celebrate this milestone alongside our customers,” said Lee Wen Hsiang, Chief Operating Officer of SAIC Motor Malaysia during the delivery event.

“Through events like these, we’re able to engage directly with our customers, listen to their feedback, and gather meaningful insights into their satisfaction levels. This ongoing connection with our customers not only helps us improve our service but also strengthens the community united by the spirit of MG,” he added.

The MG5 is in essence the (once-)British automaker’s answer to the Toyota Vios and Honda City. Much like its similarly Chinese counterpart in the Proton S70, the major selling point of this B-segment sedan is for it to be slightly larger than its Japanese counterparts. In fact, the MG5 is currently styling itself as the longest and widest in its class.

Now in terms of looks, the face of compact sedan is to be dominated by a distinctive(ly large) MG octagon on an equally sizeable grille, flanked on either side a pair of LED headlights. Its fastback profile is in turn accented by a set of 17-inch two-tone Tomahawk alloy wheels, while a subtle ducktail spoiler and chromed trapezoidal exhaust pipe trim rounds off a distinctively W205-era Mercedes-Benz C-Class-looking rump.

Powering the sole variant of MG5 available locally is a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated DVVT four cylinder, which is mated to an 8-speed iCVT that drives solely its front wheels. Total output for this powertrain combination currently is quoted by its maker at 114 PS @ 6,000 rpm and 150 Nm of torque @ 4,500 rpm, which is supposedly good enough for a 0-100 km/h time of 11.5 seconds and a claimed fuel consumption figure of 17.5 km/l.

Moving onto what lies within the red-accented black leather cabin of the MG5, among the more notable tech toys are a 7-inch digital driver’s display and a 10.1-inch central infotainment touchscreen (with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration). This B-segment sedan further features a pair of electrically-adjustable front seats (6-way for driver, 4-way for passenger), single zone climate control with PM 2.5 air filter and rear air vents, a 360º camera, a six-speaker sound system and 3 USB ports.

As for available safety kit meanwhile, the MG5 is touted to pack six airbags, and the usual brace of passive safety aids (ABS, EBD, Traction Control). Its included MG PILOT driver assist safety system does also come with Lane Departure Warning, Lane Change Assist, Blind Spot Detection, Rear Collision Warning and Rear Cross Traffic Alert, but unfortunately lacks adaptive cruise control and autonomous emergency braking.

In celebration of MG’s 100th anniversary, the MG5 was initially launched with an introductory rebate of RM 7,000, which pushed its price down to RM 83,900. This lowered promotional price is still to be available at time of writing.
