Toyota Launches New Sora Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus

Toyota has launched its latest Sora fuel cell route bus, developed to expand the use of hydrogen in public transportation and support the company’s goal of achieving a carbon-neutral society.

The new Sora is a next-generation fuel cell bus jointly developed by Toyota and Isuzu Motors. It combines Isuzu’s battery electric full-flat route bus platform with Toyota’s fuel cell system, bringing improvements in range, efficiency, safety and passenger accessibility.

Toyota first introduced the Sora in 2018 as a hydrogen-powered route bus designed to provide cleaner and quieter public transportation. The latest model builds on that technology with a more efficient fuel cell system and a larger-capacity battery.

Compared with the first-generation Sora, the total hydrogen tank capacity has been reduced by around 20%, while the driving range has increased by approximately 100 km to more than 300 km. Toyota says this range is intended to meet the operating requirements of transit buses.

The new Sora uses a compact fuel cell stack developed for commercial vehicles, offering improved output and durability. The fuel cell system is mounted on the roof, allowing easier access for maintenance by bus operators. A new high-capacity hydrogen tank has also been developed specifically for commercial vehicle applications.

Safety has also been upgraded. The bus features an Emergency Driver Stop System linked to a Driver Status Monitor. If the system detects a problem with the driver, the bus can automatically decelerate and stop before applying the parking brake.

A front blind spot monitoring system is also available to detect pedestrians and bicycles ahead of the vehicle and alert the driver.

Passenger accessibility has been improved through a full-flat floor with no steps, allowing passengers, including wheelchair users and those with strollers, to move through the cabin more easily. A one-touch wheelchair securement system will also be offered as an option from around April 2027.

Toyota will offer four variants of the Sora, consisting of two urban models and two suburban models with different seating layouts. The bus can carry up to 70 people in the urban configuration, including 19 seated passengers, 50 standing passengers and one crew member.

Hydrogen refuelling takes around 10 minutes under Toyota’s reference conditions. The Sora also complies with a newer high-speed filling standard, which could eventually reduce refuelling times by around half when compatible hydrogen stations become available.

The bus can also provide emergency electricity during disasters when connected to an external power supply unit.

Toyota has been expanding its hydrogen activities beyond passenger vehicles, supplying fuel cell systems for applications including buses, rail vehicles and stationary generators. As of the end of September 2026, the company had supplied more than 3,500 fuel cell systems to over 100 customers worldwide.

With the new Sora, Toyota and its partners aim to further expand hydrogen-powered public transportation while improving the practicality of fuel cell buses for everyday operation.
