Here’s 5 Lesser-Mentioned Details Of The New Chery Tiggo Cross

The Chery Tiggo Cross currently retails in Malaysia from RM 88,800 for the 1.5 Turbo variant.

So a little while ago, Automacha recently got up close and personal with the freshly-launched Tiggo Cross. And while a full review is still in the works, here are five lesser-talked-about features that caught our attention on this compact Chinese crossover:

1. Gas Struts For The Bonnet

A rare sight in this price bracket, the Tiggo Cross comes with proper gas struts holding up the bonnet. It is likely one of the cheapest new cars in Malaysia to offer this premium touch, though it is also curious that Chery did not spend the money on a more practical powered boot instead.

2. Battery In Its Boot

While the engine bay isn’t exactly filled with engine, Chery has nevertheless placed the 12V auxiliary battery in the boot of the Tiggo Cross (much like a BMW, but likely not for 50:50 weight distribution). This is in addition to the 1.8-kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery mounted beneath the boot floor in the Hybrid variant.

3. Detachable Cup Holder Base

Of the two cupholders in the centre console, only the right features a detachable base to accommodate longer objects. What exactly fits that narrow yet deep slot remains a mystery, and answers will likely vary depending on your maturity level.

4. Red Brake Calipers

As with many other Chery models, the Tiggo Cross features red-painted brake calipers all around. Whether the performance matches the visual flair is debatable, as the Turbo variant takes a leisurely 10.3 seconds to hit 100 km/h. The Hybrid, at least, is a bit zippier with a claimed 8.9-second century sprint — so it just about earns the go-faster garnish.

5. Inconsistent Badge Fonts

And finally, one for the ultra-anal: the inconsistent font styles used across the badging. There’s one distinct typeface for ‘TIGGO’, which clashes completely with the much bolder font used for ‘CROSS’, and it is all then topped off with a full-bordered emblem for ‘Hybrid’. Not exactly the most cohesive visual touch on what is otherwise a fairly handsome rear end.

The Chery Tiggo Cross is currently offered in two flavours over here:

  • 1.5 Turbo – RM 88,800
  • 1.5 Hybrid CSH – RM 99,800

Shared colour options for both variants include Carbon Black, Phantom Grey, and Khaki White, with each also getting a unique hue:

  • Blood Stone Red for the Turbo
  • Moonlight Silver for the Hybrid

All variants are backed by a 7-year/150,000 km warranty, with the Hybrid receiving an additional 8-year/160,000 km warranty for its battery, electric motor, and hybrid control system. Buyers also enjoy 7 years of free towing assistance.

To further tempt early adopters, Chery Malaysia is throwing in two years of free servicing for the first 2,000 customers.
