Next-Gen Proton Saga Breaks Cover At ASEAN Summit 2025

Here is your clearest look yet at the upcoming heavily-revised iteration of Proton’s popular Saga.

While bits and pieces have been teased for quite some time now, we finally have our first proper glimpse at the next-generation Proton Saga. Previewed at the ASEAN Summit 2025, this is our clearest view yet of both the exterior and interior of the upcoming compact sedan.

Despite being dressed in a very Malaysian songket-style camouflage, it is nevertheless still rather obvious that the upcoming update to the Saga will bring with it a new face. This more blocky (almost Renault-esque) visage comes courtesy of a more bulbous, redesigned pair of LED projector headlamps inset with C-shaped daytime running lights, which are connected by the now Proton-signature concave grille with an Ethereal Bow and a revised lower apron.

Beyond the new nose, the next-gen Saga also gains a revised bonnet with two subtle creases and new side mirrors featuring slim integrated turn signals. Its rear in turn gains redesigned boot lid and bumper, with the former housing a subtle ducktail spoiler and a less-subtle all new full-width light bar.

Moving along within, the new Saga’s interior has been brought into the 2020s by way of an overhauled dashboard housing a pair of large screens (that are surrounded by a set of even larger surrounds). Just below sit pill-shaped air-conditioning vents, along with a welcome selection of physical buttons.

Speaking of buttons, there is now a dedicated panel to the right of the driver that is home to the side mirror controls and engine start button. Other subtle changes Saga anoraks will notice include new door cards, redesigned wiper and light stalks, as well as reprofiled seats.

From what has been revealed previously, this next-gen Saga will technically still be underpinned by the same AMA platform that the outgoing iteration is currently based upon. Proton has nevertheless hinted that it has been significantly updated to meet newer safety standards and technologies, with this upcoming sedan apparently set to feature ADAS for the first time in its history.

As for what’s under the bonnet, the ‘i-GT’ badge on the boot lid likely points to a non-turbo version of the new 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine currently found in the facelifted X50. Industry sources suggest this mill will be paired with a conventional automatic transmission in the Standard and Executive variants, while the range-topping Premium could instead come with a CVT.

Further details regarding specifications, equipment, and pricing are expected to be announced soon. And judging by how close to production-ready this prototype looks, the official launch shouldn’t be too far away as well.

Though for those eyeing a new “people’s Proton” but prefer one that doesn’t drink petrol at all, the upcoming e.MAS 5 — set to debut in just a few days — might be more up your alley instead.
