Would You Pay RM300k For A Subaru Impreza Type R

This Subaru Impreza Type R 1997 Model Was Just Sold For Under RM300k

If you are a JDM (Japanese Domestic Model) or retro Japanese sports car lover, you probably already know that cars like this Impreza Type R pictured here have been rising in value since Covid-19 hit us.

Why? Well, it starts with pent up demand for any rare or collectable car to the need to spend all savings in case you end up meeting your maker sooner than expected.

Well, since 2021, we have seen cars like the Honda NSX, Mazda Efini, Nissan Skyline and Toyota Celica Supra triple in value. Then there are cars like the classic Mazda RX3 and Datsun Skyline quadrupling in value even before full restoration is done.

Impreza Type R

More sensible JDM cars like the Mazda MX-5, Toyota Levin, Nissan 180SX, Mitsubishi EVO, Honda Type R Series and the Honda CR-X have doubled in value and this is probably more realistic.

Interestingly, the Subaru range of super sedans, the Impreza has only a 50 to 70 percent rise in value and this probably because there are just too many of them running around in perfect condition. Yes, these fast and great handling BOXER powered cars seem to have risen less against its rival the EVO range from Mitsubishi.

This of course means that buying a used Subaru Impreza from the late 1990’s to early 2000 is reachable for most …….. except for certain very rare models which have quadrupled in value.

Yes, one such model is the 1990’s Impreza Type R.  We have just heard that a well maintained 2-door Type R has just changed ownership for a just under RM300k!

Meanwhile, in case you were wondering. The Subaru Impreza is a compact car that has been manufactured by Subaru since 1992.

A version of the Impreza known as the WRX (standing for World Rally eXperimental) was also introduced in 1992. STi (Subaru Tecnica International) variants were introduced in 1994, offering improved performance, and were popular with street racers and rally drivers. The GC8F was introduced in 1998.

The Impreza WRX STI Type R was introduced in 1997 and is a 2-door coupe version of the RA and features several rally homologation features. This is the vehicle that Prodrive used for its Group N customer cars and also the donor vehicle for the Group A WRC in 1997, 98, 99 and 2000.
