Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 4MATIC SUV Launched In Malaysia

This new seven-seat all-electric luxury SUV from Mercedes-Benz lands locally costing RM 699,888.

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has recently announced the official launch of its new EQS 580 4MATIC SUV. The high-riding sibling to the similarly-named all-electric sedan, this new addition to the German automaker’s lineup is only the second seven-seat EV offered locally, after the compact EQB also from the same marque.

Kicking off with the key technical specs first, this new EQS SUV comes in at 5,125 mm in length, 1,959 mm in width and is 1,718 mm tall. For context, it stands over 200 mm higher than its similarly-named saloon counterpart, while sharing the same 3,210 mm wheelbase dimensions.

As for the performance figures meanwhile, this particular sole variant of EQS 580 4MATIC that is officially available in Malaysia nets a drive motor on each of its axles for a combined power and torque output of 400 kW and 858 Nm. This in turn translates to a surprisingly spritely century sprint time of 4.6 seconds for this 2.8-tonne behemoth, as well as a top speed of 210 km/h.

And on the battery front, this new EQS’ 108.4 kWh pack is supposedly good for a maximum WLTP-claimed driving range of 615 km on a single charge. This Mercedes-Benz SUV is also capable of 200 kW DC fast charging, in addition to AC charging at up to 22 kW.

Now as for the summary of kit for this EQS SUV and starting under the skin again, the EQS comes as standard with AIRMATIC air suspension featuring continuously adjustable damping ADS+, which can apparently be raised by 25 mm when OFFROAD mode is selected. Those however who don’t plan to take their large Mercedes-Benz four-wheel drive off tarmac will instead likely find more use from the standard rear-axle steering, which can pivot up to 10º and should make manoeuvring this gigantic car around town just that much easier.

City-slickers will also probably appreciate the Active Parking Assist with 360º camera and Driving Assistant Package Plus that comes standard with this new EQS. The latter enhanced Mercedes-Benz active safety suite brings with it features like DISTRONIC PLUS active cruise control, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Steering Assist, Evasive Manoeuvre Support, PRE-SAFE Impulse Side, and rear sensors for the lane departure assistant.

Moving swiftly onto the aesthetics aspect of this EQS, this large all-electric Mercedes-Benz features a similar design to the rest of the German automaker’s EV lineup. This therefore means a rounded soap bar-esque silhouette with a gloss black grille panel up front, and a full-width light bar round the rear.

It would however be remissed to not point out that the EQS 580 4MATIC came as standard with DIGITAL Light LED headlights, in addition to some suitably large 22-inch AMG multi-spoke light-alloy wheels. This large Mercedes-Benz SUV also features flush door handles and illuminated door sills that apparently incorporate F1 aerodynamics. Both of which contributes somewhat to the admittedly rather low 0.26 Cd value for such a behemoth of a car.

Such a large SUV though does unsurprisingly mean a large cabin, with Mercedes-Benz touting a maximum cargo capacity of 880 litres in the EQS’ 5 seater configuration. And if anyone can’t visualise this, the automaker has been more than helpful to state for this volume to equal ‘up to 24 crates of mineral water or four golf bags’. If all seven seats are used on the other hand, a volume of 195 litres remains behind the third seat row.

Touching finally upon the tech toys within the EQS, this large SUV comes as standard with a twin-module panoramic roof and a five-zone THERMOTRONIC climate control. This large SUV also comes as standard with twin fully-electric ventilated, heated, massaging and even illuminated front seats.

Its second row seats unfortunately makes do with only heating functionality, though this is compensated for nevertheless with the standard fitment of twin 11.6-inch MBUX High-End Rear Seat Entertainment Plus touchscreens to the back of the front seats. An MBUX rear tablet standard is also standard fit on the EQS.

Then again, the highlight within this large Benz is without a doubt the second-generation MBUX Hyperscreen up front. Featuring a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and front passenger display sandwiching a 17.7-inch central infotainment unit, this already screen-filled dashboard then topped off with an Augmented Reality Head-up Display (AR-HUD). And just for the audiophiles out there, the EQS’ 15-speaker Burmester surround sound system is the first in the automotive world to feature Apple Music’s Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos.

Arriving in CKD form, the Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 4MATIC SUV is currently on sale in Malaysia with a price tag of RM 699,888.
