Kia EV4 Revealed With Both Hatchback & Fastback Rear Ends

Further powertrain and interior details regarding this Kia EV4 will be revealed on February 27th.

Kia has recently revealed the production design of its EV4, with it coming just a little over a year after the daring concept car was showcased to the world. Arrives to fill the gap between the EV3 hatchback and the EV5 SUV, this crossover is really to be in every sense of the word, as it will be available in both five-door hatchback and four-door fastback guises.

The EV4 will be sold primarily as a five-door hatch in Europe, while other global markets is set to be receiving the four-door fastback variant.

Now both body styles of EV4 share the similar frontal design, with the fastback and hatchback featuring a more rakish version of the now-familiar Kia EV-family face. Both cars also share actually similar side profiles, with only the rear quarter being drastically different between the two.

The EV4 hatchback features a more conventional last quarter, with its traditional hatchback rear end only dramatised by a set of sleek arrowhead-shaped LED taillights connected by a thin light bar strip right below its rear window. Its fastback counterpart in turn comes with what perhaps is most charitably be described a generously proportioned behind, with the added rear overhang translates to increased boot capacity to justify that unique design.

As for what is to lie under the skins of these EV4s on the other hand, Kia has unfortunately not revealed any technical specifications or interior photos with this upcoming model yet. All this will instead be fully detailed during the automaker’s EV day event in Spain on February 27th, where the company is expected to reveal a concept previewing its small EV2 as well.

That said on the powertrain front at least, it is all but expected that the EV4 will be riding on the same E-GMP fully-electric modular platform as Kia’s other EVs. This therefore should see it be offered in either sensible single front-motor or spicier dual-motor all-wheel drive guises, with there to be a hot flagship GT range-topping variant coming in due course.

Powering said motor(s) meanwhile will likely be down to choice of either 58 kWh or 81 kWh battery packs, for a maximum range of up to 560 km on a single charge. The EV4 is likely to further share the same 400 V electrical architecture as its EV3 and EV5 siblings (relative to the 800 V system on Kia’s higher end models), for a peak DC charging speed of up to 128 kW.

Finally if going by the interior of its EV3 and EV5 siblings, the production interior of the EV4 is all but likely to feature a minimalist dashboard topped by a conjoined twin-screen display ahead of a squircle steering wheel. A step-through front cabin (which Kia would tout to be reminiscent of a living room) with a centre console island should also be on the cards, as are fully-reclinable front seats wrapped in eco-friendly materials.

“The Kia EV4 is a clear reflection of our commitment to rethink mobility, and expand the boundaries of what design can achieve,” the executive vice president and head of Kia Global Design, Karim Habib said. “By offering both saloon and hatchback variants, we are bringing to our customers, the unique experience of modernity and practicality that defines the Kia EV family, in a way that suits their varied lifestyles and needs.”
