Honda’s Dream Pod Concept Is A Camper-Converted CR-V

This CR-V camper concept features a sink and a stove, as well as a bed that sleeps 2 in the back.

When the first iteration of Honda CR-V debuted, one lesser-known USP of this SUV was that its boot floor could actually convert to a picnic table. And perhaps in an attempt to one-up its original ingenious feature, Honda Europe has since decided to outfit a whole house into a current-gen CR-V.

Dubbed the Dream Pod, this CR-V camper concept is designed to celebrate adventure and draws inspiration from Japan’s capsule hotels. This particular prototype also commemorates 30 years of CR-V, with the first of six iterations launching all the way back in 1995.

Now one of the main add-ons that converts this CR-V into a camper is the EGOE Nestboard 650 that has been installed in its cargo area. This rather-ingenious modular camping kit is capable of unfolding itself to reveal a double mattress, which can accommodate two adults.

And besides being a bed, the Nestboard 650 has further has drawers below the sleeping platform that opens to reveal a stove and a collapsible sink. There are also additional storage compartments for other homely equipment, such as plates and utensils.

Other home-from-home highlights that have been outfitted in this CR-V camper include rubber floor mats and pull-out side tables. For better sleep within this camper meanwhile, there are custom rear window privacy screens and a retractable blind that resides behind the front seats as well.

Unfortunately, no camping table is to materialise from the boot floor of this Dream Pod concept. This CR-V camper does, however, feature what Honda dubs ‘tech pods,’ which is essentially a box with integrated LED reading lights and USB charging ports.

On the outside, the Dream Pod sports two-tone paintwork that is accessorised by various holders for outdoor adventure equipment. And sticking with the house theme of this CR-V, the Thule bike rack and crossbars could be said to act as the ‘store room’ in this home from home.

The Dream Pod concept is based on the CR-V e:PHEV (Honda’s first PHEV for Europe), which features a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine and an electric motor fed by a 17.7 kWh battery pack. Honda claims this PHEV SUV has an electric-only range of 79 km, though perhaps more pertinent in this particular context is its 1.5 kW V2L feature, which should offer at least a few hours of off-grid electricity supply.
