Here Are the 20 Best-Selling New Cars in Malaysia During Q1 2025

…along with a few interesting observations that can be made from this particular top 20 list.

While some might still think it’s 2024, we’re already four months into 2025. And with that, JPJ has released registration data for all vehicles in Malaysia for the first quarter of the year (January to March).

So, here’s the Top 20 Best-Selling Cars in Malaysia in Q1 2025:

Editor’s Note: The following list was compiled using data collated by the Department of Statistics Malaysia. It includes all cars that were officially registered, which means both authorised and grey imports are counted. That’s why over 4,000 units of the Toyota Alphard were registered in Q1 2025 alone…

  1. Perodua Bezza – 23,335 units
  2. Perodua Axia – 21,223 units
  3. Perodua Myvi – 18,183 units
  4. Proton Saga – 15,364 units
  5. Perodua Alza – 10,830 units
  6. Perodua Ativa – 8,413 units
  7. Honda City (Sedan + Hatchback) – 7,503 units
  8. Toyota Vios – 6,029 units
  9. Honda HR-V – 5,377 units
  10. Proton X50 – 5,011 units
  11. Toyota Hilux – 4,716 units
  12. Proton S70 – 4,424 units
  13. Toyota Alphard – 4,055 units
  14. Toyota Corolla Cross – 4,036 units
  15. Proton Persona – 4,023 units
  16. Honda Civic – 3,239 units
  17. Perodua Aruz – 3,107 units
  18. Mitsubishi Xpander – 2,798 units
  19. Jaecoo J7 – 2,706 units
  20. Honda CR-V – 2,399 units

Some Automacha Observations:

  • The top three Perodua models from 2024 still retain their usual podium positions heading into Q1 2025. The gap between the top-spot Bezza and the second-placed Axia is relatively slim—just 2,112 units. Although “slim” is relative here, as that difference alone is nearly equivalent to the total number of CR-Vs Honda Malaysia sold in the first three months of the year.
  • All of Perodua’s models (as expected) appear in the top 20, with the lowest-ranked being the Aruz in 17th place.

  • The Honda City continues to hold its title as the best-selling non-national car in Malaysia for Q1 2025. However, this may be slightly misleading, as Honda has combined the sedan and hatchback variants under one entry.
  • Interestingly, the Honda HR-V outsold the Proton X50 during Q1 2025.

  • More Toyota Hiluxes were registered in Malaysia in the first quarter of 2025 than Corolla Crosses.
  • Notably, no EVs made it into this top 20 list. However, a quick glance at the broader rankings reveals that Proton registered 1,738 e.MAS 7s in Q1 2025 — just 661 units shy of the Honda CR-V’s tally.

  • The only Chinese car (excluding the Protons) to make the top 20 is the Jaecoo J7, coming in as Malaysia’s 19th most-registered car for the quarter.
  • While not making as many headlines as the J7, Mitsubishi Malaysia still managed to shift 92 more Xpanders than the Jaecoo SUV over the same period.

  • More Toyota Alphards were registered than Honda Civics in Q1 2025 — particularly surprising considering the Civic received a facelift just this past January.
  • The Toyota Alphard is technically the second-most registered 7-seater in Malaysia so far this year, beaten only by the fifth-placed Perodua Alza. This premium ‘peti sejuk’ even outsold more affordable 7-seaters like the Perodua Aruz and Mitsubishi Xpander.

  • Despite being the model that essentially saved Proton, and receiving a facelift late last year, the Proton X70 is conspicuously absent from this list of the 20 best-selling cars in Malaysia during Q1 2025.
