Facelifted Chery Omoda 5 Teased For Imminent Malaysian Debut

This updated Chery SUV gains a newly-shortened name to match its newly-sharpened face.
Chery Malaysia has just teased the imminent arrival of its updated compact SUV, and this time it comes with not only a fresh face but also a shorter name. Now known simply as the O5, the facelifted Omoda 5 already has a registration of interest page open ahead of its expected launch later this month.
Aside from the new name, the big change involves a new face. This comes courtesy of new sharper-looking daytime running light (DRL) designs and a significantly reprofiled front bumper, with the latter housing a revised frameless grille design with a body-coloured diamond pattern.
Revisions around the profile include a new 18-inch wheel design, which has ditched the rather (subjectively) gaudy red inserts for a full black look. The previous torsion beam setup has been replaced by a multi-link rear suspension, lifted from its all-electric counterpart.
Under the bonnet, the Omoda O5 continues to be powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine. Sending power to the front wheels is now a six-speed dual clutch transmission, in place of the outgoing CVT with 9-virtual ratios.
As for the interior, what is known about this car from other markets indicates there will be no changes from the outgoing model. The kit list for the O5 includes twin 10.25-inch screens with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, faux leather upholstery and ventilated front seats, dual-zone auto air-conditioning, an eight-speaker Sony audio system and wireless mobile charger.
On the safety front, among the highlights of the newly-updated O5 are six airbags and a 540-degree camera system. A comprehensive Level 2 advanced driver assistance suite is also available, which brings with it adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, traffic jam assist, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.
Pricing has yet to be officially announced, but it is expected to remain close to the outgoing model’s range of between RM 99,800 and RM 118,800. The O5 enters an increasingly competitive marketplace alongside the freshly updated Proton X50 and its sister car, the soon-to-launch Jaecoo J5.
