This updated Chery SUV gains a newly-shortened name to match its newly-sharpened face.
Chery Malaysia has recently revealed an updated version of its compact SUV, complete with a fresh face and a shorter name. Now known simply as the O5, the facelifted Omoda 5 lands locally in a sole high-spec variant priced at RM 116,800.
As expected with any facelift, the biggest changes involve a new front end. This comes courtesy of sharper-looking daytime running lights and a significantly reprofiled front bumper, which houses a revised frameless grille design featuring a body-coloured diamond pattern.
Around the profile meanwhile, changes include new 18-inch wheels that have ditched the rather gaudy red inserts for a cleaner full-black look. Other previously crimson-painted trim pieces have also adopted a more sombre black finish.
Beyond the sharper exterior aesthetics, there have been significant changes under the skin. The most substantial involves the transmission, which has swapped the outgoing CVT for a six-speed wet dual-clutch unit.
The rear suspension setup has also been upgraded, ditching the torsion beams in favour of a more sophisticated multi-link system. The 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine up front remains unchanged, producing 156 PS and 230 Nm of torque.
Moving along inside now, the interior pretty much carries over unchanged from the outgoing model. The O5’s equipment list includes twin 10.25-inch screens with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, faux leather upholstery with ventilated front seats, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, an eight-speaker Sony sound system and a wireless mobile charger.
Safety highlights for the updated O5 include six airbags and a 540-degree camera system. A comprehensive Level 2 advanced driver assistance suite comes standard, bringing adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, traffic jam assist, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.
Five exterior colours are available with the O5: Carbon Black, Phantom Grey, Khaki White, and Blood Stone Red. The list price includes a seven-year/150,000km warranty, five years of free labour servicing, plus unlimited 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the Chery Insurance Programme.
Early-bird buyers will benefit from a launch package consisting of a three-year free service package including parts (worth RM 4,000), a ten-year/1,000,000 km powertrain warranty (worth RM 2,000), and monthly instalments starting from RM 990 via Maybank hire purchase.
