BYD Was Singapore’s Best-Selling Automaker In 2024

A total of 6,191 BYD cars were sold in the tiny island nation over the last 12 months.

BYD has become the top-selling carmaker in Singapore in 2024. According to data from the Singapore Land Transport Authority, the Chinese automaker sold 6,191 vehicles over there last year, which in turn accounted for nearly 15% of all new car registrations made in the tiny island nation over the last 12 months.

The Chinese automaker previously broke into the top 10 in Singapore’s annual car sales ranking back in 2023, with the 1,416 units sold that year sufficient to secure it a fourth place finish. The 6,191 units BYD registered in the city state in 2024 was to be an increase of 337.22% over what it had managed in 2023.

Expectedly, BYD topping the annual sales chart in Singapore in 2024 marks the first time that a Chinese EV brand has managed that feat. 2023’s sales topper Toyota meanwhile took the runner up spot in 2024, but it is nevertheless worth highlighting that the 5,736 cars the Japanese automaker shifted in Singapore still somehow marked an increase of nearly 50% from what it has achieved over there the year prior.

Following up in third and fourth place in Singapore’s annual car sales ranking for 2024 are to be two German marques, with BMW’s 5,042 registrations over there last year helping the Bavarian outfit just beat out its three-pointed star counterpart’s 4,887 sales for the final spot on the podium by 155 units. Tesla on the other hand finishes up the top 5, with its 2,384 EVs sold over the last 12 months representing a significant 154% spike in sales over the 940 units it shifted in 2023.

Rank In 2024 Brand Units Registered in 2024 Units Registered in 2023 Rank in 2023 Market Share in 2024 (%) Market Share in 2023 (%)
1 BYD 6,191 1,416 4 14.4 4.7
2 Toyota 5,736 3,857 1 13.3 12.8
3 BMW 5,042 3,379 3 11.7 10.2
4 Mercedes-Benz 4,887 3,850 2 11.4 12.7
5 Tesla 2,384 940 9 5.5 3.1
6 Hyundai 2,052 1,143 7 4.8 3.8
7 Nissan 1,518 1,329 5 3.5 4.4
8 Honda 1,457 682 10 3.4 2.3
9 Mazda 1,258 1,173 6 2.9 3.9
10 Kia 1,214 1,074 8 2.8 3.6

In taking a look at the bigger picture for Singapore’s sales figures for 2024, the city state’s 43,022 new car registrations represent a 42.3% increase over the 30,255 figure it achieved in 2023. This is a reflection of the higher supply of certificates of entitlement, which are required to register vehicles in the island nation.

While all top 10 brands registered more cars in 2024, four of them – Kia, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz and Nissan – lost ground in terms of market share. This can be primarily attributed to the many new Chinese marques that have since recently entered the Singaporean market.

One last major point of note is for EVs to have accounted for 33.6% of new car sales over there last year, with 14,448 units registered. This is to be significantly up from the 5,467 examples registered in 2023, with over 70% of EVs registered last year coming from just 3 brands: BYD, Tesla and BMW.
