TuJu Navigation App Faces Issues Just One Day After Its Sudden Rise in Popularity

Malaysia’s TuJu navigation app ran into technical problems after receiving a massive surge in downloads. The app reportedly attracted more than 700,000 downloads within 24 hours, following Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s recommendation to use it as a local alternative to Wazes.

The recommendation came alongside a directive restricting civil servants from using Waze during official duties. However, TuJu’s sudden popularity also exposed several issues with its performance and navigation features.

Why Did TuJu Struggle?
  1. A sudden increase in users

The sharp rise in downloads may have placed additional pressure on TuJu’s infrastructure. If its servers could not handle the increased traffic, users could experience slow loading times, connection problems and failed navigation requests.

  1. Possible server and API limitations

Navigation apps rely on servers and external services to process requests and provide information. Limited server capacity or API restrictions could contribute to disruptions during periods of heavy usage. However, the exact technical cause of TuJu’s problems has not been confirmed publicly.

  1. Limited crowdsourced traffic information

Waze benefits from a large community of drivers who contribute real-time road and traffic updates. TuJu has a smaller user base, which could limit the amount of crowdsourced information available in some areas.

  1. Navigation and interface issues

Users have also reported problems with route guidance and the app’s interface. These issues could affect the overall experience, particularly for drivers who rely on accurate directions while travelling.

  1. Differences in road coverage

TuJu focuses on Malaysian roads, highways and facilities such as rest stops. However, its navigation performance across different urban areas may still need improvement as more people begin using the app.

TuJu vs Waze
Feature TuJu Waze
Developer LLM and Prosignal Google
Main focus Malaysian roads and highways Global road navigation
Live highway CCTV Available Not a core feature
Toll information Toll calculator Toll estimates
Traffic updates Limited crowdsourced information Large driver community
Data hosting Malaysian-hosted infrastructure Google’s cloud infrastructure
How Can TuJu Improve?
  1. Strengthen server capacity

TuJu could improve its infrastructure to handle sudden increases in users. Automatic scaling could help the system manage demand during busy periods, although the app’s actual technical bottlenecks still need to be identified.

  1. Improve navigation coverage

Further work on urban roads, route accuracy and local navigation data could make the app more reliable for everyday driving. More consistent guidance would also help build user confidence.

  1. Encourage more driver participation

A larger community could provide more useful traffic updates and road reports. Features that allow drivers to report congestion, accidents and other road conditions could help improve the information available to users.

TuJu’s rapid rise shows there is interest in a locally developed navigation app. However, maintaining that interest will depend on its reliability, route accuracy and ability to handle a growing number of users.
