Manthey’s 992 911 GT3 RS Touts A Literal Tonne of Downforce
This new Manthey Kit for the GT3 RS also adds six-figures (in British Pounds no less) to the Porsche’s price.
Manthey Racing, the boffins behind all the record-breaking ‘Ring times with Porsche, has recently revealed a new aero kit for the 992-iteration of 911 GT3 RS. And the headline figure with this new package is that at 285 km/h, this road-legal track monster produces over 1,000 kg of downforce.
Now among the more immediately obvious changes made to this Porsche from the Manthey kit is the loss of its standard glass rear window, with it instead replaced by a 25% lighter carbon fibre panel featuring a massive shark-like vertical fin that reminiscent of the one seen on the 963 endurance racer. This sizeable aerodynamic element incidentally works with six extra smaller fins mounted on the roof, and their combined role here is to both increase cornering stability as well as increase cold air intake into the engine.
Another rather unmissable aero add-on meanwhile that has since found its way round the rump of this Porsche is a set of even-larger endplates on its already massive DRS-equipped split wing, with this GT3 RS further gaining a pair of carbon fibre aero disk covers for its massive rear wheels. The Manthey Kit has also brought along with it a more monstrous rear diffuser, which is then complemented by a new lip spoiler, carbon canards, a pair of dive planes at each corner and redesigned Gurney flaps along its arches up front.
Aside from the aero enhancements, the Manthey Kit adds a few changes to the GT3 RS’ semi-active coilover suspension setup. These include the fitment of new uprated independently-controlled shock absorbers, a stiffening of its spring rates (+30% up front and +15% at the rear), as well as a newly-developed acceleration sensor control unit.
Just for those who have ticked their Porsches with carbon ceramic brakes too, Manthey is currently offering a set of racing brake pads that have been specifically designed for track-day use. The German tuning firm is more than happy to sell customers a bunch of cosmetic goodies as well, with said items ranging from body decals and illuminated door sill guards in carbon fibre to LED door projectors and a towing eye.
What has nevertheless been left well alone by the engineers at Meuspath is the 911 GT3 RS’ 4.0-litre naturally aspirated flat-six. This therefore still sees that sonorous-sounding lump still chuck out a more-than-healthy 518 horsepower, as it proceeds to rev to the heady heights of 9,000 rpm.
Manthey touts that development for this kit has already been two years in the making, with it having been honed from thousands of miles of testing on various European racetracks. And while on the topic of circuits, the German tuning firm naturally would want to crack out a hot lap at the Nurburgring, but weather conditions over there recently haven’t been all that conducive for a proper run.
“Our data promises a significant improvement in lap times compared to the standard 911 GT3 RS,” says Nicolas Raeder, Managing Director of Manthey Racing GmbH. So the question here is exactly how much could this new aero kit shave off the stock car’s previously-recorded ‘Ring run of 6:49.3, and whether or not it could perhaps beat the outgoing GT2 RS’ current overall ‘Ring record time of 6:43.0.
In any case, customers who are interested in souping up their own GT3 RS’ could already place their orders for the Manthey Kit through the official dealer network (Porsche has owned a 51% stake in Manthey since late 2013). Prices for this kit start at £99,999 (RM 560,000) in the UK.
