Chery Has Made 15 Million Cars Since Its Establishment In 1997

The 15th million Chery car produced was a Tiggo 8 that rolled off its Brazilian production plant.

Chery has achieved a monumental milestone in its automotive journey recently, as it celebrated the production of its 15 millionth vehicle since its inception back in 1997. The 15 millionth Chery produced was to be a Tiggo 8, which rolled off the production line at its assembly plant in Brazil.

A special ceremony was held in Chery’s Chinese headquarters of Wuhu to celebrate this occasion, and the automaker’s chairman Yin Tongyue shared: “Reaching 15 million vehicles is not just about increasing production numbers or accelerating Chery’s growth. It represents relentless innovation — turning the impossible into reality and pushing the possible into even greater potential.”

The Chinese automaker has proudly proclaimed that it has been China’s top passenger car exporter for 21 consecutive years, with it touting too that its current export total of 829,353 units from the first three quarters of this year is to be a near 25% year-on-year increase from 2023. Chery is also keen to highlight that it presently has cars rolling off production lines simultaneously in four countries outside of its home base: Egypt, Brazil, Kazakhstan, and Malaysia.

Its current dual-track strategy that focuses on both domestic and international markets simultaneously has been credited by the automaker in being the driving force behind its substantial growth, with exports now representing nearly 50% of total sales for the company. Chery currently has a presence in over 100 regions worldwide, spanning five continents.

Now as part of Chery’s expansion across five continents, it has previously tipped Malaysia as being its gateway to other right-hand drive markets. The Chinese automaker currently assembles all its locally-available models at the Inokom plant in Kulim, Kedah, with its Jaecoo off-shoot having also recently begun production of its J7 SUV at their own site over here in Shah Alam, Selangor.

Just to take a quick look back at where Chery started some 15 million cars ago here, the first-ever car produced by the Chinese automaker was the Fengyuan. Rolling off its production line in Anhui back in December 1999, this compact sedan (that is incidentally based upon a Seat Toledo) sold nearly 50,000 units in five years and ranked among the top 8 best-selling models domestically back then.

Looking forward to its next 15 million meanwhile, Chery aims for future strategy to centre on building the brand’s user experience, advanced technology and steering towards global expansion. This goal is not only to boost sales but also to enhance product quality, optimise structure, and elevate brand value, offering global customers more exciting, diverse, and distinctive choices.
