102,300 New Toyotas (& Lexus) Were Sold In Malaysia In 2024

2024 marks the 3rd consecutive year that UMW Toyota had sold over 100,000 cars in Malaysia.

UMW Toyota had recently announced that it had concluded 2024 with steady sales momentum, recording over 12,800 units sold in December. This thus brought its total annual units sold to more than 102,300, marking the year 2024 as the third consecutive year for the Japanese automaker to surpass its 100,000 annual sales goal.

Though without wanting to burst its bubble, the 102,300 cars that UMW Toyota had sold over the last 12 months (which includes Lexus by the way) is incidentally to be a couple thousand short by its sales peak achieved in 2023. In fact, the 5,807 unit shortfall for 2024 (against 2023) marks a decline of 5.4% from the year prior.

This fact is then to be all the more damning after knowing that the total local auto sector’s total industry volume is projected to surpass 800,000 for the first time ever in 2024.

Now this noticeable decline in sales UMW Toyota has experienced this past year does further emphasise the undeniable fact that the Japanese is currently facing stiffer sales competition in Malaysia, with a large portion of said competitors no doubt being of Chinese origin. Looking at things another way however, a dip of just 5% in the face of the ongoing onslaught from the many Chinese marques still shows that many Malaysians are still very much keen on getting a Toyota.

What more is that 2024 has been a relatively quiet year for Toyota in Malaysia too, with no notable model launch right till the tail end of the year, where it debuted the new Camry and facelifted Corolla Cross. The refreshed mid-sized SUV should be a boon to the big T’s sales figures this coming year, with the rumoured imminent arrival of the Yaris Cross to then all but likely carry the the Japanese automaker over the top of its 2023 annual sales peak in the next 12 months.

In ending on a slight tangent from sales to aftersales here, UMW Toyota had also recorded 1.42 million returning customers for aftersales services in 2024, showcasing the automaker’s commitment to prioritising innovation, quality, and customer satisfaction.
